Cambridgeshire / Martin gravestones in Cambridgeshire
« on: Thursday 30 August 12 14:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi...I'm looking for the gravestones of my paternal ancestors. The Martin family were mainly farmers in the Wardy Hill area of Ely, Cambridgeshire. There are no records of them in their local church of Coveney, so I wonder if they may have been buried elsewhere?

According to my family, my paternal 2nd great grandparents were affluent farmers. This is true because James Martin (1785-1856) made a Will in 1848 leaving his farm, outbuildings and household items etc to his widow and 3 of his 12 children.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: When requesting Photos - check for a headstone first

This has been the case when researching my family tree. My maternal grandparents didn't have a gravestone at all, so I asked at the office and someone had to show me the plot, it's very sad that the family couldn't afford a headstone.

My own parents' gravestone (white chalkstone type) was so worn my family put together to buy a new one, black marble with gold lettering, much easer to read and less chance of it wearing away.

Hi...My maternal Grandfather James Knott  was born (1872-1952) in Winteringham, Lincolnshire, his family were all lightermen, I'm not sure what sort of cargo he carried but his route was Yorkshire, mainly Hull to Sheffield, where he met and married my Granny in 1895. I would just like to know about his life as a lighterman, I never knew my Grandad as he died when I was a baby, my mum didn't talk much about her family, so it's all rather vague. Any help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi. ;D..Sorry I haven't replied early, have been very busy.

Yes, I have heard of Andrew Martin, his 2xgr grandmother Elizabeth Martin (b.1811) and my great grandfather Charles Martin (1825-1899) were siblings. However, his records only go as far back as James Martin (1694-1749).

My brother and sister went to Wardy Hill and Coveney yesterday (27 August) looking for the graves of the Martin family but couldn't find them, could they have been buried in Ely Holy Trinity or elsewhere?  ???

Kind regards

I've managed to trace my paternal family back to James Martin (1694-1749) but would like to know who his parents were. Apart from the LDS records, is there any way I can look for records further than the late 1600s? The Martin family were all farmers so they could have moved around to find work? They settled in Wardy Hill, Coveney and stayed there until my grandfather Joseph Martin (1867-1933) left around 1894.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Mick...Just to put you in the picture, I'm the youngest daughter of Cecilia (nee Knott) and Joe Martin, we lived in Gainford Grove on Greatfield, not far from your mum and dad. How's your mum, I haven't see her in ages.

The Melfords came across to England around 1852 (about the time of the 1848-1854 potato famine). Rose Ann and her father came across first followed by Honoria (I believe Honoria changed her name to Hannah,or it was misheard) and the rest of the children. In 1858 Rose Ann had an illigitimate daughter Mary Ann who Thomas and Honoria raised as their own. However, Rose Ann was found on the 1861 Census as being an inmate of the workhouse. Rose Ann Married George Handly in 1862 and had a further seven children, Elizabeth (1862) Ann (1864) Mary (1870) Jane (1873) Rose (1875-1956) James (1877) and Sarah (1880-c1970).

Yes, John could be Rose Ann's brother and may have gone back to Ireland after the famine. As Melford (often spelt Milford) isn't a common name in Co. Mayo, it seems more likely that it is him. The general concensus is that Thomas originated from Armagh/County Down districts as there are no records for him in Co. Mayo but there are a lot of Berrys there, so Honoria was definitely from there.

On the Sheffield 1881 Census, Rose Ann and George are living at Ct7 1 New Street with their family and Honoria/Hannah Melford is living at Ct1 4 New Street with  Mary Ann and Mary Ann's son John T Melford.

It's not a good idea to put personal email addresses on these public forum sites as you don't know who's reading them, pity really because I have a database full of our Knott families going back to 1665, not all my own work I hasten to add, a distant cousin called Alan Knott (great grandson of Jonas Knott)helped me out there.

Kind regards
Chris

Hi Mick...Your grandparents James Arthur Knott and Ethel Paddison were my maternal uncle and aunt, isn't it a small world? I can only assume that you're Joey and Eve's son? Your siblings are Maureen, Linda, Stephen and Shawn?

This is what I have on the Melford family so far, Thomas Melford (1814-1878) married Honoria Berry (1816-1888) around 1834 in Co. Mayo, Ireland.  Their children were Rose Ann Melford (1838-1918) S A Melford (1838), Margaret Melford (1846), Thomas Melford (1851) all born in Co. Mayo, John Melford (1853) was born in Sheffield.

I do have more information on this family if you're interested?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards
Chris.
