Family History Beginners Board / Relationship to Head of House

Good afternoon,

Any help trying to figure out the connection between my Grandmother and the family she was boarding with in 1921 would be gratefully appreciated:

Rhoda Thomas Nicholson (transcribed as Rhodda) is boarding with:
John Henry Parkin
Elizabeth Parkin (Mackarinah Elizabeth Smeeton (one can understand why she used her middle name))
Wallace Henry Parkin
in Sheffield at the time of the 1921 census.

She is from Hull and purportedly grew up in a children's home for which I have yet to find details of. Other than her childhood I have all the information one could need on Rhoda but would love to know why she was with the Parkins.

Her mother, the elusive Sarah Rosa Naomi Osburn has her own thread here with lots of info until I lose track of her in 1915.

Rhoda's maternal grandmother (Rose Hannah Shaw) died in 1920 which could tie in with her move.

If anyone comes across my tree in Ancestry Rhoda's father is in as Thomas Henry Parish but this is incorrect and I havent got around to deleting him yet. Thomas Henry Parish was actually at the same address with his wife as Sarah when Rhoda was born. Rhoda's father is shown as Henry Thomas on her BC and I put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5. I no longer believe Henry Thomas and Thomas Henry Parish to be the same person.

I hope I havent confused too much, I just wanted to get as much info down as possible.

I look forward to any input.

Ironically the last venue there before the refurbishment of Humber Street and the Fruit Market area was The Museum of Club Culture.

There are lots of other pictures of Humber Street, of which No 10 appears on numerous here:

Some licence transfers (from various editions of the Hull Packet and Hull Daily Mail:

Mar 1870 - Thomas LUNN to James WHEAT

Jun 1871 - James WHEAT to Joseph BULMER

June 1880 - Herbert PINDER to Thomas KNOWLER

Dec 1880 - Herbert PINDER to John Edward CANTRELL

April 1881 - John E CANTRAL to John SHAW

Sept 1881 - George SHAW to John PETTINGER

Jun 1882 - James PETTINGER to Albert BARSTROM

Jun 1886 - Edward NEYLON to George NORMAN

June 1887 - Robert RAWSON to Henry Taylor HOUFE

Sept 1894 - Henry Taylor HOUFE to James BEADLEY

July 1900 - James BEADLEY to William MACHIN

April 1904 - W. MACHIN to A. WILLIAMSON

This is really interesting thank you, it seems my ancestor (George Shaw) was only at the tavern for a short time.

This is the building now.

My GG Grandfather was proprietor in 1881.

It was never demolished in the end (as per the article above)

I know this is a bit early but there is a London baptism for a Harvey Rowell son of Harriet Rowell  5th Jan 1884, St John’s Wood St Mark Westminster

I’ve seen that thank you, I really don’t think it’s him although there’s no real indication either way!

Other than Harvey Jnr I think it’s the only entry for the birth of a Harvey Rowell though.

I’ve even considered Harvey isn’t even his given name which is why I’m at such a brick wall.

Where is the trial record, and does it yield a service number for him?

It’s on fold3 through Ancestry. Unfortunatley no service number 😫

What’s known about Charles Rowell Burton?

To me nothing, I’ve only come across him on someone else’s ancestry tree, also with no further information.

I suspect that he’s not even a Rowell - Burton if I’m honest. The birth entry shows Charles R only and MMN as Burton when in fact it would be Morgan (although I am aware they weren’t shy of telling a lie or two back in the day).

Mother’s maiden name is also indexed as Burton on Harvey’s birth registration.

You’re right, it is so very possibly a brother and worth looking into further.

Someone else has also pointed me in the direction for a trial of a H Rowell, a private in the KOYLI (fits so far).

I signed up to get the info and he was sentenced on the 1/1/1917 to 56 days for doing awol and was held at Hedon.

‘My’ Harvey Snr married Margaret on 5/3/1917 so all the dates fit.

It’s ever so strange there is nothing else.

Thank you for your help this far 😊
