Staffordshire / William Salt, born in Waterfall, 1791/2
« on: Wednesday 01 November 06 21:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find the parents of William Salt, born 1791/92,
in Waterfall, Staffs.

The 1861 census shows him living in Woodlincoln (now Woodlinkin) on the Derbyshire/ Notts border, but states his birthplace as Waterfall, Staffs (about 1791).

IGI gives a baptism of a William Salt in Waterfall on 16.12.1792, but I have no idea if this is the same person.

Can anyone help?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Mary Ann PIKE & Emma Elizabeth PIKE
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 17:47 BST (UK)  »
We know that these ladies, both spinsters, lived at

Eastcote,
The Avenue,
Totland Bay,
IOW

in the early twentieth century. They grew up in Derby & both went into service, but in different parts of the country.
Mary Ann (Polly) Pike was born in 1848 & Emma Elizabeth (her niece) was born in 1860. They died in 1936 & 1946 respectively.

In the 1901 census, Mary Ann is a lady's maid to the wife of Alfred Holt (living in Liverpool, but on holiday in Exeter), whilst Emma is a servant to Ronald P. Jones, architect, in
St. Pancras, London.

Can anyone tell us:
1. when they moved to the Isle of Wight?
2. why they moved there, when we have no trace of any previous connection?
3. whether their house, 'Eastcote', still exists? What is it now called? Is it still a private house?

We believe that Emma Elizabeth's grave is in the churchyard at Totland Bay, but would appreciate confirmation of this. Also, is Mary Ann (Polly) buried there as well?

Any info. would be most appreciated.

Sorry, as far as I know they have not researched their tree.

Lancashire / Alfred Holt

Can anyone tell me whether the Alfred Holt (born c. 1830 in Liverpool) living at 'Crofton', Sudley Road, Garston in the 1891 census is the Alfred Holt that founded the 'Blue Funnel' shipping line?

Also, whether Alfred Holt had any connection to the Isle of Wight.

My interest is actually in one of the household's domestic servants, Mary Anne (Polly) Pike, who is listed as a lady's maid. Polly retired to Totland Bay in the I. of W,  & we don't know why she went there. (She was born in Derby in 1848).

I don't have any info regarding Turnpike Close or 'the Cottage' on Kedleston Road, but your comments regarding the Sherwin family have rung some bells.

Shortly after the First World War, a Mrs. Florence Sherwin lived at 38, Wheeldon Avenue, which links Parkfields House to Kedleston Rd.  (My mother-in-law (now 87) lived two doors away.)

As far as I am aware, Florence -& her husband George- had only one child, Ada, who married a Mr. Smith & they had 4 children;
1. Joan, the eldest, born circa 1918, who married a Bill Wild. She is now widowed & lives in Norfolk.
2. Johnny, who died as a boy.
3. Kathleen, married a Mr. Elwell who was killed in WW2. She died in a car accident about 2 years ago.
4. Dorothy, still alive, married to Peter ?.

The 1901 census shows George, Florence & Ada (age 6) living with George's father & brother (both named John). John senior is reported as being born in 1834 in Bourne, Lincs.

I hope that this helps.

Hi Arranroots

Thanks very much indeed. That must be the right family, as the children's names & ages all fit. I missed it because the database I used had Elias's surname mis-spelled.

Ooops!

I forgot to mention that Eli Whysall was born in 1805 & that his wedding was in 1826, his wife's name being Elizabeth Granger.

I have located Eli Whysall, my g.g.g. grandfather, in the 1851 & 1861 censuses, which show him living in Codnor & Loscoe.

The 1851 census suggests that he was born in Codnor, whilst in 1861 his birthplace is stated to be Pentrich.

I cannot find him in the 1841 census & IGI merely gives his marriage.

Does anyone have any information regarding his parents or siblings? Any facts would be most appreciated.

Sorry to reply so long after your posting, but the following may be of interest.

I presume that the chapel was that of the Congregationalists, which was sited on the junction of Traffic Street & London Rd. It was built in 1846-48 by Henry Isaac Stevens, with a large Corinthian portico.

The chapel was converted into the Coliseum cinema & subsequently demolished to make way for a traffic island.
