Also, I cannot find a pair of candidate parents for that George Winsor in any of the descendants of William and Zenobia.

Devon / Mystery Winsor family in Ugborough 1780s-1790s

A series of birth entries in the Ugborough church records shows:

George Winsor & wife Betty (mnu):

dau  Susannah b. 1787- d.bef 1791
son  George b. about Jun 1788
dau  Elizabeth “Betty” b. 1789
dau  Susannah b. 1791
dau  Mary b. 1793

Descendants' DNA shows this George Winsor tracking back to William Winsor of Modbury and wife Zenobia Prior, but I cannot find the above couple before they show up for the birth of first daughter Susannah in 1787 - no marriage records - and after 1793 this couple disappears from Ugborough records.

This couple is definitely NOT George Winsor and wife Elizabeth Wills of Staverton (no DNA matches with that line and they had children before, concurrent and after all born in Staverton).

Are there any directories from the 1790's Ugborough showing tradesmen/occupations?

Any thoughts on other resources I could use in research would be greatly appreciated.

Another potential from Kew records, again possibly indicating a father-son sequence, from 1776:

"Date: 1776 Mar 27
Samuel Seddon, Piccadilly. He has orders to prosecute Armadoe Limbery and James Spence for having HM's stores in his possession or for stealing lead from the Thunderer. The former was sentenced to pay a fine and to remain in gaol until it was paid. James Spence indicted and tried for stealing lead, although he confessed in writing, signed before Justice Jones, and committed to gaol, he was proved at the trial by Lawrance Storekeeper of Woolwich and was found not guilty."

1731 vs 1748 not enough time to be titled shipwright worthy of a helper, I suspect it may be his father who is noted in that 1748 record.  Now I am wondering if the dockyard would put his son on the books as an apprentice/helper.  It's a possible lead.  Thanks again!

Marriage 1756 (not 1754) to Mary Drew of Plumstead, James Spence "of this parish" St. Mary Magdalene.    Burial record 13 Mar 1813 at Deptford St. Nicholas at age 82.

Fairly certain he was born circa 1731 based on a Deptford death record, calculated his given age (always approximate) at time of death and it brings me back to 1731-ish.  Thanks for the link to the online record, he married 1754 in Woolwich.

Kent Resources / James Spence of Woolwich - occupation 1750's?

Can anyone suggest resources to find the occupation of an individual.  James Spence "of this parish" of St. Mary Magdalene in Woolwich and married to Mary Drew - I have found marriage and baptism records, but no indication on any of those records of his occupation, and, no indication of his place of birth, although the imputed year of birth from his death record indicates he was born about 1731.  I am looking for any clue as to his origin.  If I could nail down that he was a shipwright or some other occupation associated with the shipyard, it might help, and I am trying to avoid the goose chase of hiring research at Kew.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

London and Middlesex / Access to microfilm for St. Luke Charlton next Woolwich?
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 18:17 GMT (UK)  »
I do not seem to be able to find browsable microfilm for an 1833 marriage performed at St. Luke Old Charlton.  I am looking for witnesses as I believe the bride and groom are both from out of parish as she had a child 2 months afterwards.  I believe the groom to be from Deptford St. Paul and the bride to be from Greenwich St. Alphege but the bride's identity is very fragmentary and there are multiple candidates for her parents.  Hoping to find a sibling or parent as a witness that will help ID which candidate she is.  I have access to ancestry and to family search, but am in US so local history center access is not feasible.  Any suggestions?
