Staffordshire / Re: looking for Astle

thank you Richard for all that info, i do appreciate it, as i have no idea where to start looking for this family. i've only just found this was the county William was born in. prior to this i have no idea of his history before he arrived in NZ.

oh, and you wondered if he ever met his family again. i dont believe he did. he re-offended for a while when he first got to NZ, then he settled down, eventually married a Maori woman and had a family. theres nothing in his biography to suggest he ever saw them again.....all really rather sad...he was only 12 when he was sent out.

Staffordshire / looking for Astle
« on: Friday 13 April 07 07:27 BST (UK)  »
hi there, i'm looking for some Astles, however i dont have very much to go on, so i'm hoping my small amount of info might ring a bell with anyone!!.

i'm looking for any info on Joseph and Mary Astle, who had at least one son in about 1830 named William.
thats all i have....i dont know Joseph or Mary's dates of birth or marriage. there may well be other children.

i'm wondering if anyone has searched for their Astles, have a Joseph and Mary, who had a son called William who has disappeared by the 1841 census.

i am descended from this young William who was sent to NZ  as a child prisioner.

the info has been taken from Williams marriage certificate in NZ, stating his parents and place of birth. i guess theres a chance the names could be wrong, the spelling of Astle could be different!.

this is just a shot in the dark really, as i'd love to know more about this young lads backgroud!.

thanks for any help received.

Hi Tony,
i've read this thread fully in the past and just came back to see if there was any more updates.
I can't give you any info....you probably know more about my ancestor William Astle than i do ::) :).

what i was wondering is whether your biographies will be avaliable to read/buy once you have finished your degree?.
i would be interested in filling in any blanks about him...especially where he came from in England.

all the best
kiwirach.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861 census lookup please- William Pine
« on: Friday 20 October 06 11:03 BST (UK)  »
hi there :).

i wonder if some clever people could help me with my great great grandfather William Pine. he was born in 1842 in Corscombe Dorset, and emigrated to NZ in 1865 i'm lead to believe.
i have found him at home with his parents Luke and Frances in the 1851, but have lost him in 1861. he could be anywhere, as 1 if not 2 of his brothers where in Wales by the 1861 census.
i would love to know where he is on census night if thats possible, before he heads off downunder!.

any help greatly appreciated,
kiwirach.

Argyllshire / McEwan/McEwen in North Knapdale
« on: Sunday 17 September 06 14:38 BST (UK)  »
hi everyone, this is my first post after discovering this site a week or so ago!.

one of the branches of my tree that i'm searching is the McEwans, however i'm starting to discover a hitch. i'm finding what seems to be correct information however there's an 'e' where there should be an 'a'.

is it possible that someones mispelt the name, and its all the one family, or is it possible that there are 2 famillies in north knapdale called McEwan and McEwen.....or am i asking to hard a question ::) ;D

would love some advice from people who know the area.

many thanks,
rachel.
