Hi Folks,

Many thanks to you all for coming back on this thread.  I was on holiday in France when I got the email notification of the postings, thanks to MacDonalds  :) .  Unfortunately, it would have taken too much time to post a reply after checking the information I have on the family.

I have now confirmed that Janet McKenzie was the daughter of John McKenzie and Janet McDougall, who married in New Parish, Greenock, 13/6/1836.

I have traced 7 children of this marriage, All but Elizabeth are approximate, William 1838, John 1840, Duncan 1842, Janet 1844, Henry 1846, Elizabeth 31/7/1849 and Grace 1850.

The above information was taken from the 1851 and 1861 census returns.

I have also managed to go back another generation with Janet's maternal side of the family.  Janet McDougall was the daughter of John McDougall and Elizabeth Dow, who married in Middle or New Parish, Greenock, 14/6/1805.  Can't remember where I got that from but possibly IGI.

As an aside, and to throw a spanner in the works, Thomas and Janet's  daughter, Janet Fulton born 4/3/1868, married Dougal McDougall 2/7/1886, which takes me back to another John McDougall.  This one possibly married to a
Flora McColl?  Both Johns' births c 1770/1780s.  Oh well, onwards and upwards, and no work done today  :)

Many thanks again,

Anne

Hi Mary,

Thanks for that.  I know that there were Doherty's in the family and that my grandfather had lots of Doherty "cousins".  According to Philip's marriage certificate of 1877 he was "full age" so that puts him mid 1850s or before.

As an aside, did Ireland record the deaths of WW1 soldiers?  I know that Scotland did and can issue death certificates for military personnel.

Once again, many thanks to you all, I feel the brick wall coming apart brick by brick.

Hi BF,

Many thanks for checking the 1911 census for me.  I do not know when either of them died so it could cost a small fortune to find the relevant information.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind spending money, and I am sure I must be a share holder with Scotland's People!  I do, however, wish that the relevant authorities in Ireland would take control of what are "public records" and make them available to the public.

Sorry, rant over.  I think I may book a day at the GRONI.  It won't be cheap but at least I'll get a holiday at the same time  8)

Thanks again,

Anne

Hi BF,

Many thanks for the information, it certainly sounds like "my" Philip.  He was dead by the time of his son's marriage in 1916, but I do not know when he died.  His wife, Mary Ann, had also died by that time and my mother was under the impression that she died sometime during the mid 1890s.

I really appreciate all the help I have received on this thread.

Kind regards,

Anne

Hi andy14,

could the last bit be "as their pledge".  That would make sense if it was indeed a bond of some kind.

1911 and then 1901 census for Ireland will eventually be coming online and that should help many of us searching in Ireland. Counties Antrim, Down and Kerry are scheduled for this month.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html

This is good news.  I hope to establish when this family arrived in Scotland.  I know my Grandfather was here in October 1912 (when his first wife died) but no idea when they first came here.  I have a feeling it may have something to do with the decline of shipbuilding in Derry in 1912 (all the brothers worked in Fairfield's Shipyard in Govan)

Hi aghadowey,

Thanks for that, I wasn't scrolling down after opening the details page, doh!

1858 ties in with them both living in St. Columb's Wells.

Yes, I did mean Derry Genealogy Centre.  I hope it does open again soon as I can't find anything further on these two and I am sure they came from quite large families.

Again, many thanks and kind regards,

Anne

Hello Christopher,

I have found out a bit more on Philip and Mary Ann McDaid.  I was in Ireland for 3 weeks this summer doing some research and I have a copy of their marriage certificate. They both lived in the city, Philip in Middle Road (now Francis Street) and Mary Ann in Bridge Street.

They married in St. Eugene's Cathedral on 9th February 1877 and Philip is described as a stonecutter on the certificate.  His father was Daniel McDaid (dead) Rank, Nailer, and her father was John McDaid, Labourer.

I have also found a Daniel McDaid and a John McDaid in St Columb's Wells (Priest's Lane intersect) in the Griffith's Valuation (Valuation of Tenements), this is where my mother had told me the families had stayed.  Unfortunately, I do not see anyway of establishing the exact year the Griffith's Valuations were carried out for each area.

This is all the information I have to date on this branch of the family and wonder if you, or anyone else has any information on when the Derry Family History Society will re-open?

Many thanks and kind regards,

Anne

Hi Ann,

I am hoping to get to the NAS sometime as I have several things to check there.

I never thought of 'phoning the Free Church to ask if they had ref nos etc.  Sound like a good idea.  Thanks for that.
