New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Maori History - Help

Just a thought have you thought about taking the print out to the tauranga library in town.  Although I dont live in Tauranga any more I know they had a great family section.  Maybe by asking the staff there to have a look they may be able to figure out where otuhare is??? They may have old maps of the Tauranga area.

The Ringatu faith was and still is quite a stunch faith.

It was quite common for a child to take their fathers name as their surname.  Hence the reason why Harihari surname is the same name as her fathers.

Another thing of interest is Harihari Rauwharangi mothers name.  With Harihari mothers name being Te Whakaata  Te Wherowher I do wonder if there is some connection to the Maori King Te Wherowhero???  (Not saying that there is) Could be another thing to explore.

I know you not tracing Mr Gage, but the name Hori Keeti translated is George Gage.  Hence the reason for the library records saying Gage but the certificate saying Hori Keeti.

One other suggestions try the Maori Land Courts, give them a call to see if Harihari Rauwharangi, her father or mother had any land passed on to them.  Quite often whakapapa was given when land was passed on.  I found quite a bit of information there, death date of an maori ancestor which lead to a print out of a death certificate and another generation.

Ummmm that's about all I can think of at the moment, give the TGA library's family section in town a go you never know, they may point you in the direction for more information.???

Cheers

Hi there just a thought has anyone checked to see if Lillian is in the cemetery at Drury?  Not the one at Gatland Road, but the one across from the school?  Just a thought.  Cheers

I agree the list they have just put is awesome includes names of un-marked graves this time as the old list only included names with a head stone.

Hi there I can check for you I will head up to the local library as they have a book which has listings of everyone in the cemetery.  But if it is an un-marked grave you may have to go back to the Papakura District Council.  They are really helpful as we located my uncle's un-marked grave in the Methodist childrens section.  And well now he has a head stone.  Will get back to you during the week.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Can someone pls explain Maori naming patterns?
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 05:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there,  since I have started researching my whakapapa I have found that my grand parents surname have change over the years.

eg.
my grandmothers maiden name is Reti,
her father used Reti as well,
his father used Hoani (Reti was his first name)
his father used Waimango (Hoani was his first name)

So we have gone from Waimango to Reti.  It was quite common for the children to use their fathers first name as their surname and so on.

If you ever get to have a look at the Maori Land Court, quite often they used alias!  another one of my ancestors made it hard for me to find as she used Puataka or Ngakai as her surname but we only ever knew it as Ripikoi!  Puataka & Ngakai were parts of her parents full name.  And just to throw me off guard Ripikoi was the name of her brother.

Hope this is of some help.
Cheers ???

Hi there,  I have no idea when he died.  I am trying to find out what his first name was.
If it is the same person we are looking for we know that he went back to Scotland and re-married but unsure when he left NZ.

If this person is one in the same he married a maori women from the Waikato area and they had children.  Was it required by law for children who had a European parent to register their birth?

Also would they have been required to register their marriage, and also do the intention to marry?  The marriage would have been between 1830's - 1850's at the latest?

Any ideas?

Thanks heaps for your reply much appreciated.
