Meath / Re: McCann's / Gibney's of "Eastmeath" / Meath
« on: Friday 04 July 14 05:38 BST (UK)  »
Finally found an old map online that shows "Eastmeath" as all of present day Meath !!  Not sure what year they changed it to just Meath but that means my McCann's could have lived anywhere in Meath during the early to mid 1800's. These McCann's had ties to the Gibney's also of "Eastmeath" -- John McCann born 1828 -- Thomas Gibney born 1827.  Anyone have ties to these families or info ??
  Thanks -- Pat

Meath / McCann / Gibney in Meath

Still searching for ties to John McCann born 1828, his sister Margaret born ~1830, and Thomas Gibney born ~1825  -- they list their place of origin as "EastMeath" -- John & Margaret McCann arrived in NY in the spring of 1847 -- possibly with siblings James 28yo, Sally & Betty 21yo, and "G." McCann 18yo -- does this connect with anyone out there ???
     Thanks,
              Pat

Sevilled -- thanks for the McCann tip -- I've been spinning wheels for a long time -- some day I have to get to Ireland -- wish I had more than "EastMeath" to go on !!
  Thanks again,

Armagh / Re: McCann surname

Hi Lisa,
It's great to hear from another McCann -- it is said that the McCann's originated in Armagh but the only clue I have is from naturalization papers that state my Gr-Gr-Grandfather John McCann was from "Eastmeath" -- prior to finding that info, I was told he was from Westmeath -- it's has been impossible for me to trace his origin especially since I also can't find an exact date of birth or his parents names -- he was born in ~1828 and I think he had a sister Margaret born ~1832 -- is there any way to narrow down the McCann families that were in the eastern part of Meath in the 1840's and left for the USA -- I believe he arrived in the USA in 1847?
From an old ship record that may be the one he arrived on -- he was with a G. McCann, Betty, Margaret, James, and another McCann that the first name is hard to read ??   Margaret McCann married Thomas Gibney who was also said to be from "Eastmeath".  Maybe we are long lost cousins -- it would be great to find out !!  I hope to get more info so I know where to go when I get to Ireland someday !  Look forward to hearing from you again --  Thanks -- Patrick M. McCann
