Thank you so much, I will work through them.
The photo on ancestry is mine which I shared, the only picture I have of Adam and Maria together.
As for Eliza I have also found her listed as niece but Adam might have been a bad lad with one of his sisters-in-law I'm still trying to solve that one!!
Very grateful to you for the help
Kathryn

World War Two / Is this your relative? Liberation of Rome 1944 English soldiers
« on: Tuesday 08 July 14 16:51 BST (UK)  »
My Dad was in the 8th Army at El Alamein then Monte Cassino before finally reaching Rome in 1944. I have 2 photos of him with the same man who was clearly a good friend. I wondered if he is the relative of someone out there who may like the pictures. Dad didn't write his name on the pictures
My Dad was Adam Alan Thornton born 08.01.1922.
Hope someone out there finds their dad on my picture.
Kathryn

Thank you for the information. I did take everyone's advice and buy the book and what a book!!
I still haven't found anything on John William Thornton's (granddad) role in the war. My Aunt keeps saying he enlisted and was injured in the stomach but I haven't found any military records for him at all. He was born 1899 and at the time of WW1 lived at the same 26, Annfield Plain address. I am surprised they don't seem to have joined the same unit.
Again any detectives out there who can help I'd be very grateful.
Regards,
K

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Beckett St Cemetery Leeds

Hi,
I still wouldn't consider it very safe. I am working at St James's and there was someone assaulted in the cemetery a couple of months ago in broad daylight.
I wouldn't recommend going without a male friend or 2 and don't take a bag or anything obvious that people might want to steal.
I make it sound awful don't I. I promise not all of Leeds is like that!!! The cemetery is a favourite haunt for people with substance abuse issues though.
Kate.

Hi BG,
I also only found the one son George.
Thanks for looking for me but like you I have doubts about the one record that looked anything like my family.
All the best,
Kate.

Hi Wendy,
I have dug out the Francis Robert Kane and Elizabeth Revington marriage cert and it makes things more confusing!
On the cert it lists fathers as Francis kane a cashier, deceased and George Revington a Tailor now deceased. Francis Robert is described as a mariner aged 27 which would make his birth year 1863 not 1858. They married at St Michael's catholic church. Elizabeth's address is given as 5 Dee Street West Derby and Francis as 14 Farm or Fann Street, West Derby.
Grandma's birth cert gives Elizabeth as Kane nee Rivington of West Derby and the place of birth as the workhouse, Walton. Francis is desribed as mariner, merchant services.
I found a birth record for a Francis Robert Kane in 1858 which I sent for and just got, his parents were Francis Kane a cooper and journeyman and Mary Ann Kane nee Burlinson. The address given looks like 16, Back Rathbone Street, Liverpool.
I also found out from someone on GenesReunited that Francis Kane and Mary Ann Burlinson married 13th March 1848 at St Michael's both of full age and Francis described as a warehouseman. His father was daniel Kane a soldier and Mary Ann's father was Robert Burlinson a victualler.
I wonder if this is the right Francis Robert Kane or if I need to look for someone born closer to 1863 which would cut the age difference down between him and Elizabeth who was listed as 22 years in 1890 when they married.
Confused of Yorkshire!!!!
