Armed Forces / Descendants of WWI soldiers sought for St Pauls commemoration
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 15:23 BST (UK)  »
Direct descendants of soldiers badly injured during the conflicts of WWI are being sought by St Paul’s, as the Cathedral prepares to display a unique piece of embroidery crafted by more than 100 recovering men.
Months of research by the Cathedral’s Collections Department has revealed 133 names of men from the UK, Canada, Australia and South Africa, who worked to create an elaborate altar frontal, used for many years after the War at the high altar.

It is hoped that photographs, letters and other items personal to the soldiers can be found so that their stories may be told to Cathedral visitors over the period of 2014-18.
But with 133 names, ranks, numbers, regiments and hospitals of soldiers from Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa, as well as the UK, it is hoped that local, regional and national media, as well as social media, can help trace the relatives.
Anyone who recognises a name on the list should contact the Reverend Canon Michael Hampel at precentor@stpaulscathedral.org.uk

I wonder if users of this forum may be able to help.  A link to the article and list of names is below.

Armed Forces / Re: Battery Records of the Royal Artillery 1716-1859 by MES Laws.

I have a copy of the book but do not tend to do 'look ups' as I am such an infrequent visitor to Roots Chat these days.  However, I have sent you a PM. (Also to the other person asking).

I got my copy of the book from Abe books about four years ago (and it was not cheap then!)

All the best

The Common Room / Re: What do I do with you when you die?
« on: Wednesday 14 January 09 15:00 GMT (UK)  »
It's a good question and one which many people are afraid to ask.

I must say that I was quite pleased when my daughter brought up the subject. I think it's quite important to be able to talk about death, after all, it's inevitable. My mother has made all her own arrangements - choice of coffin, hymns, readings etc and she has it already paid for!  I have been happy to discuss things with her as I know it gives her some peace of mind, my brother on the otherhand refuses point blank even to be in the room if the subject crops up.  My husband already knew that I want to be buried (he wants to be cremated).  He also knows that whilst the medics can have what they like from me beforehand, they are NOT to take my eyes! I know, I know, I'll be dead, but...

Just in case my OH is not around when the time comes, having now discussed it, at least my daughter now knows as well!

The Common Room / What do I do with you when you die?
« on: Tuesday 13 January 09 13:52 GMT (UK)  »
This question was posed by my daughter at Christmas!  My husband and I lived in various locations, mainly overseas, most of our adult lives.  Hence the question.  Whislt we both still have family living in the UK neither of us feels that we 'belong' to either Parish, but don't want to end up being buried/cremated overseas.    Despite us never having discussed this beforehand, we both said that we would probably like to end up in the place we got married - Wimbotsham, Norfolk.

My daughter also added that we would be a family historian's nightmare family having lived in Germany, Cyprus, UK, Germany, India, UK, Belgium, Germany, Belgium - in that order.  Perhaps it's a good job it's all been recorded!

I think it's a good idea.

Devon Lookup Requests / John RUNDLE - Baptism request
« on: Wednesday 04 June 08 11:56 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help me find a baptism record for John RUNDLE circa 1811.  All the census records apart from 1841 give his birthplace as Devonshire or Tavistock. In 1841 he is in the Newcatstle -upon-Tyne Workhouse which shows he was born out of County.
A list if Baptisms for Tavistock post 1813 received from the Devon fhs does not appear to have him listed and I can find no record on the IGI.

His father's name may be Daniel.

Any help will be very gratefully received!

Y.

The Common Room / Marriage record - no father's name
« on: Tuesday 03 June 08 12:58 BST (UK)  »
I have recently obtained a copy of a marriage record for my ancestor who married in 1826.  I was really hoping to find out the fathers' names, however neither the bride's father or groom's father are named.  Is this the end of the line for me, or can anyone suggest other ways in which I may be able to find this information.  Would this information perhaps be available from the Banns?

Any suggestions very gratefully recieved!

Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: St Thomas, Portsmouth - KELLOCK
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 16:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Nell,

I know that Adam Kellock married Ann on 27 Feb 1827 from his R A Service Records.  I originally thought they may have married in Woolwich but I haven't found any record there.  So, as two of their daughters were baptised at St Thomas, I thought I'd give that a go.

This is definitely not the Adam Kellock you mentioned, as mine died in 1847 on Corfu.

Thanks anyway.  He's a very elusive chap this one!
