Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Agnes Catesby
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 10:12 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

I am descended from Dorothy Catesby of Whiston, Northants (1527-1613). Whilst looking for her connection, I did find another Dorothy Catesby b 1585, Hardmead, Bucks.
The Dorothy Catesby b 1527 was a cousin of William Catesby, the grandfather of Robert Catesby of Gunpowder plot fame.
I haven't researched the Dorothy Catesby of Hardmead.

Thanks for the info on Catholic registers.
I have recently discovered that I have CARYLL ancestors, but have found very little in Parish registers.
A trip to the West Sussex Record Office is on the cards.

Hello all
Be very careful with the Mary ROFFEY, who married John WHITMORE. This Mary ROFFEY was from Lingfield and was the daughter of George & Sarah ROFFEY. They moved to Redhill in 1840's and lived in Linkfield Street.
There was another Mary ROFFEY born around the same time in South Godstone, who married William WINCHESTER and lived opposite the Jolly Farmers at Horne.
There are so many Mary ROFFEY's that it becomes a minefield,

Hello Lee

I am descended from the Humphrey's of Horne. The earliest that I have them in G.Humphrey c1676.

They lived at Froggett's Heath in 1800's.

Hello once more

Lazarus Roffey's parents were Robert Roffey (1698-1745) and Lydia Harber (various spellings).

The road in Copthorne called Roffey's Close is named after that line of the family who farmed there in 19th century.

Hello all

The Robert Roffey who married Sarah Legge was the son of Lazarus Roffey and Sarah Cripps. He was a second cousin of the Robert Roffey who married Mary Ledger. It all gets confusing as the same names are used in many family lines.

G'day all
Merle Common is south of Limpsfield, near Staffhurst Wood, OS map ref 407491. It's not that far from Edenbridge, so you might find some connections there.

Good morning all
It probably is Merle Common as spelling wasn't formalised in those days, a name (place & person) was spelt how the clerk thought it ought to be spelt.
I have found a couple of instances of people being in two adjoining Parish registers, it was probably because the person/family was well known. The East Surrey Parishes interlock like fingers and families could have trouble reaching one church because of path conditions, so used another church. Perhaps the next week they remarked to the Rector that they'd had a child baptised at a neighbouring church and he put it in his register.
