England / PIKE surname volunteers for all Pike clans
« on: Sunday 27 May 12 20:48 BST (UK)  »
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html

The PIKE SURNAME DNA project now has 177 members representing 20 different Pike clans. It is administered by volunteers David Pike and Stuart Pike. As volunteers we are glad to assist you in unraveling the fog in your Pike tree. While time constraints won't allow us to build your full tree, sometimes we can point you to a source or a detail you’ve missed. Sometimes we can link your branch to another branch and introduce you to lost cousins. Our Mailing List has rich and extensive case studies of various Pike lines. http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/other/DNA/PIKE-DNA.html

We believe DNA is a powerful tool in unraveling your ancestors, but you don’t need to have your DNA tested for us to help you, we gladly will help anyone who’s interested in Pike genealogy.

Part of what we can assist in, is understanding how DNA can be used to break through historical brickwalls and allow you to focus on certain branches of Pikes. DNA has limitations, and tests for males and females will produce different results. As a surname group our focus is primarily on the Pike paternal line and the Y chromosome tracks that particularly well. We can point you to the best test for your particular needs. Our links page provides multiple sites for understanding DNA http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=links.html and specific questions can be handled via email.

Also, should you decide that DNA is relevant for your needs and get your test results, we will work with you to understand what the markers reveal or don’t reveal about your ancestry.

Finally, DNA testing costs as the vendors are not volunteers but rather commercial labs. David and Stuart serve as fundraisers that can provide sponsorships to help defray the costs. These funds are donated by Pikes from around the world and are to encourage more Pikes to be tested.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / PIKE DNA project makes frontpage news
« on: Wednesday 12 August 09 15:48 BST (UK)  »
David Pike got a nice front page write up about the PIKE DNA project in his hometown newspaper St John's, Newfoundland, Canada.  http://www.thetelegram.com/index.cfm?sid=276705&sc=79

In particular David’s research is on PIKEs from Poole.

DNA is a powerful tool that has revolutionized genealogy by allowing a simple mail order, mouth swab to confirm existing paper trails or uncover hidden trees. We've reunited long-lost cousins, some now separated by continents. We've confirmed suspicions that some Pikes are related to others, and also that some Pikes families are not related to certain others.  And we're continuing to learn more about where we each come from.

Both David and I are volunteers. And despite our surnames, DNA shows we are not related.

There's some exciting news to report: The PIKE DNA project experienced
another perfect 25-marker match in February.  This is now our 15th
perfect 25-marker match, so some of the novelty of such matches
might be beginning to wane.  But this time the match was between two
people who not only don't have any other matches in our project, but
they live on different continents and their common ancestor was to a third continent!
WOW!

As for the people involved, the first one to test was David Hilton Pike
(kit 98682) who lives in South Africa.  David's ancestry goes back to a
William Pike who emigrated from the village of Keyworth in Nottinghamshire
in 1820.  When David's test results came back from the lab in October,
he had no matches.

More recently, Jerry Pike (109431) from Maryland, USA got tested.  The results
came back with the exciting news of a perfect match with all 25 of the markers that David had tested.

David and Jerry did not know each other prior to discovering that they
were a genetic match.  Since then, they've been comparing their family
trees and have successfully determined just HOW it is that they
are related.  When David's ancestor William left England in 1820 for
South Africa, William's brother John remained behind.  As it happens,
Jerry had traced his Pike line backwards in time from the USA to Canada
and then to England, where the trail got stuck with a John Pike who had
lived in the village of Wilford in Nottinghamshire, but whose place of
origin was not known.  This is where the pieces of the puzzle came
together:  not only is Wilford a mere six miles from Keyworth, but
Jerry's John was David's William's younger brother! In other words,
They are 4th cousins (twice removed).

This new match has led to the creation of a new "group" on our Results page at
http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html
Specifically, it is "Group 4" where these results can be seen.  In recognition of the creation
of this new group, the pushpin for the village of Keyworth in the map of
the UK shown on our Results page has been updated to show group number "4".

Anyone else researching a PIKE line should contact David Pike or Stu Pike at the above web page, if they have questions about DNA testing.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA studies
« on: Saturday 07 July 07 17:02 BST (UK)  »
There are several companies that do the testing. One of the largest is FamilyTreeDNA http://www.ftdna.com/ and they charge $99 US for the very, very basic 12 marker test. Due to international exchange rates, that means about 50 pounds for those of you on that side of the pond. The test is mail order and very easy.

Some surname projects provide sponsorships for new members who are short on cash, so try and locate a web page for your surname and ask them (if money is tight for you)

I'm the co-admin for the PIKE DNA surname project. Here is an update I just posted on ancestry.com.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

At midyear, the PIKE/PYKE DNA Surname project is growing rapidly. We now have 74 individual members and the number of genetically different Pike family lines found so far is at least 28. Since last year, the number of clans in the British Isles is expanding so much we have displayed the results on a map.

http://www.math.mun.ca/~dapike/family_history/pike/DNA/index.php?content=results.html

Also, we have our first PIKE with a paper trail back to Germany! It will be fascinating to see where this leads to as more results come in.

Others have opined that DNA can be the most powerful tool in unblocking your family tree. It has revolutionized genealogy. Still, surveys show that a number of people don’t understand it, or believe it can’t help them. We have a number of links that explain the science, but here are three sources that give a good, easy to understand, layman’s overview.

Hey friends, reading DNA info can overwhelm you. I suggest most people watch this video for a layman's overview.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Re: Looking for Mersh, Pike and Hayward Lines
« on: Wednesday 21 March 07 13:56 GMT (UK)  »
There are a number of PIKEs who have had their DNA tested and hail from the Hampshire region. Surf around this site and you can email directly anyone who lists their pedigree as being from that region, such as Roger Allen Pike (50318)

David-
I assume you are going to spend a day or two in London...
The Society of Genealogists http://www.sog.org.uk/index.shtml
seems like a must do?

Stu Pike

Hi Jan (and anybody else with a Pike family interest).

Meanwhile, I'm beginning to make plans for my visit to Dorset in July.  I've never been to Dorset before, so I'm looking for suggestions and recommendations... for instance, are there any things that would be a "must see" for somebody interested in Pike family history?

Marry Christmas to all the Pike's out there. :)
Merry Christmas from California.

Can I assume this is Abingdon, Oxfordshire? (us dang foreigners don't know the geography very well)
