Cork / Re: Lady McNaughton ship to Australia
« on: Friday 29 April 11 05:56 BST (UK)  »
Hello Gallindanne,
Joseph Walsh arrived in NSW on board the Lady McNaghten Convict ship in 1835. He was tried in 1834 at Antrim and given a 7 year sentence for stealing clothes. He was single,a Catholic and his occupation was given as a porter. Date of birth 1816. This is from the Irish transportation registers. A goos website is Irish convicts to New South Wales. Also try the Australian website TROVE where you will find a 'treasure trove of digitised newspapers from all states in Australia from 1803 to about 1954. Often the papers had stories abput the convicts their assignments etc.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information I can always do look ups for you at my local family history centre!

Hi Mary,
If you can get access to Find My Past they have the lists of Chelsea Pensioners. They are working with the National Archives to add the diitised records to their site.

Hi Christopher, thanks for your help. The Brosnahan family were Catholic, married in 1840 in Catholic Church Buttevant before they migrated to Australia.CORKLAND I now believe should have been recorded as COUGHLAN,so I'm now following this up.I think this family was also Catholic.

Hi Lacharna,I checked shipping records for you when I was at my local family history centre.the Cupples arrived in Australia on 22 November 1856 in Sydney after leaving Liverpool England on 23 Aug 1856.They were bounty immigrants paying one pound (Australian Immigration Act) for their fare.Thomas was listed as ag/ farm labourer born in Aughadery(?)Down the son of John and Agnes who were both deceased.Letitia(which happens to be my daughter's name!!) was the daughter of John and Agnes Clark both living at Innderagle(????sorry handwriting indistinct)Armagh where Letitia was born.Thomas and Mary J were born at Guildford Down.Thomas and Letitia could both read and write. They were Church of England and were all in good health. Hope this helps,Oz Peggy.

Hi Brian
I have just found a reference to James Margarson, a baker, living in High Street Penrith NSW. He was actually the next door neighbour of my g.g.grandfather who  had the wheelwright business. This information is from a book called "Granny Cochrane's Memoirs of High Street  Penrith."She also makes reference to the fact that this James Margarson was the brother to her first husband! She doesn't give his name.If you were to search the Penrith City Library website there are numerous photos etc. and you may even find newspaper refs.here of your ancestor.Good luck.Happy to do look ups for you, too.
