Good to hear from you Harborough.
Your mother Isabella was the sister of my mother, Barbara.   I am happy to share my info on the McGowan line.  Hopefully, you can fill in some of the data I am missing, and I can give you some info if you are missing it.  I have data going back to the early 1800's, although some are just names - frustrating isn't it.
Mabe you could give me your website address and then we can exchange info, or we can do it via our email addresses - whichever you prefer

Hi Sue, thanks for your message.  Unfortunately, I have found no record of any Emily McGowan in my notes on the McGowan branch of the family.
To the best of my knowledge, only 2 members of the family left Scotland for England - Daniel McGowan born 1921 in Campbeltown, and his family, and also another Daniel (gets confusing) who was born in Campbeltown in 1870, married Margaret Bryden in 1895 and later moved to England (possibly St Annes?).  He was a baker.
Maybe you can find the birth information of Emily and that certificate will give you the names of her parents.
Good hunting

re recent postings by Duckweed and Gadget, the family I am trying to trace left Carsphairn for Campbeltown around the 1870s.  Of course, the farmers mentioned by Duckweed could be descendants of one of the brothers but if so, I have not come across anything in the records to prove a farming connection.

Thanks anyway

been there....done that  :) , but still no eureka moment  :(

And the Mitchell Library in Glasgow is cheaper (i.e. free) for Glasgow records

Thanks Joe - I have the info from all the census returns from 1851 to 1901 for this family but thanks anyway for taking the time to look into it.  The problem is locating the birth record for the first 3 children (see Clare's first note of 7th Aug 2006 and my reply), but it looks like the formal records don't exist although I have not yet finished checking the OPR page by page by page by page by....   you get the idea  :)

I have also found William's business recorded in the PO Directory for Glasgow, but there is no additional information

Thanks again
Iain

Gadget, thanks for the info - I'll try to contact Runner and see how far down the road he takes me (poor pun, sorry)

You probably spotted the deliberate mistake in my last reply - the date for William (brother of Hugh McCulloch) should be 7 Oct 1785, not 1975!!!!

Thanks again

Gadget, thanks v much for the info on Hugh's baptism.  As it happens, I was in Edinburgh today and found the record you mention along with his siblings William (7 Oct 1975), Anne (22 Dec 1789) and Thomas Moffat McCulloch (4 Oct 1792), all under ref 617, 001, frame 283 on the microfilm.  So progress at last.

Thanks for your help   :) :)

hi Scatza.........my McGowan (sometimes spelt as McGown) side of the family have been in Campbeltown, Argyll, in Scotland from the mid 1800's to the present day.  The earliest I have traced is a Daniel McGown who died in 1877 aged 65.  He married a Jane Smith (not the most unique name to find :( ).   But I have not been able to trace their birth or marriage.  According to census returns, their earliest children were born in Glasgow, their later children (1851 onwards) were born in Campbeltown.
So are we connected?
