Family Bibles / Re: HALLAM (Hayfield Derbyshire) family bible
« on: Wednesday 02 July 25 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Anc* (and other published trees) is infested by trees that have been copied from others despite not being relevant to the person who posts it. As far as I can tell, none of the trees published are more closely related to Mary Ellen than me. I have been in contact with as many of the descendants of Mary Ellen's nine siblings that I have been able.
I've posted here in the hope that the bible is in the hands of a person interested in family history.

The Common Room / Re: English Civil War
« on: Wednesday 02 July 25 19:33 BST (UK)  »
It's the anniversary of the Battle of Marston Moor!
My family has passed down the story that our ancestor Peter ORMEROD (b after 1610 Gambleside, Burnley, m Alice HAYDOCK buried 14 Dec 1689) fought at this engagement. Given that Charles TOWNELEY of Towneley, Burnley led an infantry unit (???regiment according to Townley family history handed down) in the Marquis of Newcastle's army and the catholic leaning of the Haydock family, it is possible that Peter was in that unit. Charles died at the battle and is buried somewhere on the battlefield. My Peter was not likely to have been an officer and I have not been able to find his name listed in any documentation that I have found over the last 30 years. If anybody has access to otherwise inaccessible information or has another idea, please shout out.

One Name Studies: H to M / Re: Hallam Family

I don't have access to Ancestry anymore unless I go to the public library. My interest is in the Peak District (and Stockport) Hallams. Steven Hallam has a very good website for the family...

Shropshire / Re: ROE connection to Dorset?
« on: Thursday 21 November 24 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Turia
My Roe family research was tangential to my research into the Kyrkes and I have not retained my material.
I remember reading Dorothy Bentley Smith's book on Charles Roe but do not think the baptism details of Rev Thomas Roe came from that book. If you are interested in Charles Roe, then you ought to read that book, not just the online material.
I wouldn't have cited 1670 baptism unless I was fairly satisfied it was right but at this point in time cannot stand by it. Apologies for not being able to help.

Family Bibles / HALLAM (Hayfield Derbyshire) family bible
« on: Sunday 13 October 24 12:03 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the family bible that was kept by Edgar Montague HALLAM (1865-1943). I think it was passed on to his daughter Mary Ellen (1898-1981) but I've lost contact with that line of my family. I'd be grateful for any leads as to its whereabouts, its contained births.

Lancashire / Re: Ancestry of Thomas LOMAS (abt 1819-)
« on: Saturday 03 June 23 17:37 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in Lomases (and Lomaxes) in the northwest of England, particularly around Chapel-en-le-Frith and Macclesfield.
This Thomas LOMAS is not a direct ancestor of mine.
I haven't made any progress with his origin and parents.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Offence in prison record
« on: Tuesday 28 July 20 15:03 BST (UK)  »
Tx, I agree, it looks like Drunk Rtous Beh at Salford. I've not seen similar terms on adjacent pages.

It would have been much more interesting if his brother's father-in-law (boatman) had persuaded this gang to 'do over' his competition, or even 'sort out' the father-in-law'.

But there you go, just a normal Friday night in Salford.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Offence in prison record
« on: Tuesday 28 July 20 10:58 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking into the story of Joseph Oldfield FLETCHER (1855-1926)

He and his conspirators (Willm McCurry, Thomas Flanagan, John Robottom, Thos Nugent and Edward Conley) were jailed for 7 or 14 days in Strangeways in October 1877 for doing 'something' to a boat in Salford.

His next of kin in this record, brother James, had boatman Samuel BLOOMFIELD as a father-in-law; this might have a bearing on motive.

I can't make out the details. Please would you help out.
