Lancashire / Re: Ancestry of the Kyrke-Smiths esp the name Kyrke
« on: Thursday 05 March 26 11:55 GMT (UK)  »
Edmund's parents moved around a lot but settled in Hoylake, Wirral in the mid 1860s. The only link I can find with the Kyrke-Smith ancestry is a tentative one through the famous Roe family but have discounted that because Edward SMITh and his wife didn't give any of their children a Roe moniker.
Endmund appears to have gone to sea and I can't find any link to the Kyrke-Smith ancestors other than a vague co-location (Liverpool).

It had been a while since I looked at this wall. On checking, I have Henry's christening -b 29 Oct 1851, chr 4 Feb 1852 at Liverpool All Saints. I had assumed I had the birth certificate but I don't. I had attributed a marriage that on closer inspection looks suspect.
The scales have fallen from my eyes, a birth cerificate is needed!
Thank you for putting me on the right lines.

Lancashire / Ancestry of the Kyrke-Smiths esp the name Kyrke
« on: Wednesday 04 March 26 17:34 GMT (UK)  »
I've been researching the Kyrkes of Chapel-en-le-Frith including those that moved away. I have chanced upon the Kyrke-Smiths of West Derby going back to Henry Kyrke SMITH b 1851. He was the youngest of the children of Edward SMITH and his wife Sarah MAY. I do have tentative ancestry of this couple but neither this ancestry nor exploration of neighbours and other possibilities has uncovered the reason for the Kyrke moniker. Do you have any ideas?
This topic has been previously, incompletely covered in the Kyrkes at Gwersyllt topic in the Denbighshire section.

Family Bibles / Re: HALLAM (Hayfield Derbyshire) family bible

Anc* (and other published trees) is infested by trees that have been copied from others despite not being relevant to the person who posts it. As far as I can tell, none of the trees published are more closely related to Mary Ellen than me. I have been in contact with as many of the descendants of Mary Ellen's nine siblings that I have been able.
I've posted here in the hope that the bible is in the hands of a person interested in family history.

It's the anniversary of the Battle of Marston Moor!
My family has passed down the story that our ancestor Peter ORMEROD (b after 1610 Gambleside, Burnley, m Alice HAYDOCK buried 14 Dec 1689) fought at this engagement. Given that Charles TOWNELEY of Towneley, Burnley led an infantry unit (???regiment according to Townley family history handed down) in the Marquis of Newcastle's army and the catholic leaning of the Haydock family, it is possible that Peter was in that unit. Charles died at the battle and is buried somewhere on the battlefield. My Peter was not likely to have been an officer and I have not been able to find his name listed in any documentation that I have found over the last 30 years. If anybody has access to otherwise inaccessible information or has another idea, please shout out.

I don't have access to Ancestry anymore unless I go to the public library. My interest is in the Peak District (and Stockport) Hallams. Steven Hallam has a very good website for the family...

Shropshire / Re: ROE connection to Dorset?

Hi Turia
My Roe family research was tangential to my research into the Kyrkes and I have not retained my material.
I remember reading Dorothy Bentley Smith's book on Charles Roe but do not think the baptism details of Rev Thomas Roe came from that book. If you are interested in Charles Roe, then you ought to read that book, not just the online material.
I wouldn't have cited 1670 baptism unless I was fairly satisfied it was right but at this point in time cannot stand by it. Apologies for not being able to help.
