Have you tried contacting the school?  I had ancestors working at the school in the 19c and the school archivist was very helpful.

Many thanks for all of the fantastic information.

This is going to get complicated  ???

GAJ: The Jacob you list in 1841 is in fact the Jacob I am researching, though later in his life he was known as George and later Jacob George.  I have the 1851 and 1861 records and I am fairly happy with those [even though in 61 the name was spelled Hemmings].

I am trying to tie him in with the 1881 record where he gives Ware as his place of birth.  I have always assumed this to be Weare [not too far from Winscombe], and for some reason he was being less than truthful.  If I am wrong, the next reliable information I have is his second marriage in Westbury, Wiltshire in 1884 which means he effectively disappeared for 23 years!

I'll keep digging.

World War One / Re: 1914-1918 war records

Firstly, may I apologise for neglecting this thread for so long.  Other fascinating things have popped up including one murder and one manslaughter case in the family and I have spent all of my time running these down.

Terrible lot the Hemmenses!!

Anyway, back to Char's war record.  It seems that I may have been given some duff information by one of my rellies as no-one else can remember anything about him having served in the military in any capacity!  Another red herring - sorry.

craigside_pete:  Great site, I'm sure there will be some relevant stuff there when I get time to digest all of the information.  Love the pictures of the memorials!

mmm45:  Many thanks for that link!  Ernest is the grandson of a rather mysterious relative that I have been trying to nail down for ages!  I had no idea that Ernest had served in the Expeditionary Force.

Gotta love this place  ;D

Wiltshire / Re: anyone have the Wiltshire Court index??
« on: Tuesday 16 September 08 12:50 BST (UK)  »
If anyone does have access to the index I am trying to find information about George/Jacob Hemmens/Hemens who disappeared in 1861 when he was living in Weston Super  Mare.  It is possible that he re-appears in 1881 in Bradford on Avon, though I'm suspicious of this census entry.  He married Julia Drewett in Westbury [5a 224] in 1884.

Was he imprisoned for all this time?

Somerset / Somerset place name WARE
« on: Friday 25 July 08 11:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am looking at the 1881 census for Bradford on Avon [RG11/2050] and I see a Jacob Hemmings - place of birth Ware, Somerset.  I cannot find any such place in any list of Somerset villages.

I think the enumerator may have been a bit deaf as I believe the surname should read Hemmings.  Any ideas about the true identity of the place of birth?

Regards,

Adrian.

Hi All,

I am looking to find out where Harold Hemmens was detained at His Majesty's pleasure in 1940.  Is there an online resource available?

Regards,

Adrian.
