I am trying to trace the marriage records of Richard Barnard and Mary.

Richard (1787-1854) is buried with Mary in St Stephen’s, Fylingdales. Mary died in March 1851 and from the burial record she was born in approximately 1786.

I have found Richard's 1851 census but not any 1841 census matches for the couple.

Their son William Barnard was born in 1817 in Robin Hoods Bay, but I believe I have found a couple of earlier births that maybe children of this couple. John Jillson Barnard (1811-1812), and John Barnard (1812 to 1848) both in Robin Hoods Bay.

Richard was a Mariner so it could be that he married Mary elsewhere however in all my years of looking I haven’t found any leads.

I have also considered the the name 'Jillson' may have been related to Mary, again however this has returned no matches.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you

I am trying to locate Jane Clark(e) of Chaddesden, Derbyshire.

Christened in St Mary’s Church, Chaddesden 25th May 1823
Parents:
William Clark(e), Farm Labourer (abt 1791 - 1867)
and Ann (abt 1795 - 1879)

Jane had a child, Reuben Clarke, out of wedlock - Born 15th June 1843 and Christened 27 Dec 1846, (in Chaddesden)
No idea who his father is.

Reuben was living with his grandparents in the 1851 Census. No sign of Jane.

I am assuming she got married, moved away or died. I have checked potential marriages, census’ and death records but have not been able to move this research forward.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you

Where was your Jane Clark in 1841?

She's not with the family in 1841 Chaddesden Village
William 50, Ann 45 , Andrew 15, Emma 14, German 9 and Henery 6
1841 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7SG-93N?lang=en

And as you mentioned not with her parents, brother and her son in 1851
1851 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGD8-G6F?lang=en

Could she have left the UK after birth Reuben? Have you checked passenger lists?

Who is Reuben with in 1861?

in 1861 he is working for John Barker, Farmer of 220 acres, as a 'servant' in Chaddesden.
Luckily they were accurate with Reubens, age and place of birth which helped to find him relatively quickly.
In 1871 he was Married to Emma (Carrington) with two children, still living in Chaddesden

Reuben's marriage on 11 Nov 1867 to Emma Carrington
his father named as John occ boatman ???

Thank you for looking into all these different potentials Ladyhawk, it is very much appreciated. I will follow up the potential leads that you have found for me.

I did have a brief look in the past at whether Jane may have left the country, but given her fairly common name, I didn't get very far. Maybe an angle to review again, there may be more records available online now.
With regards to Reuben's marriage certificate where he named his father as John Clarke. After locating him baptism record I figured he just took his mother's name and turned it into John so he didn't leave the section blank?? the fact he said that he was a 'Bank Man' is interesting though, given that his Grandfather William was never described as such...maybe that was his actual fathers profession?

On Freereg there is a marriage on 20 March 1855 of a Jane Clark, spinster age 27 to George Clark, bachelor, butcher, age 34 at Duffield, Derbyshire. Brides father is William Clark, farmer. Brides age is a bit out but I haven't investigated any further

Chrissie
Thank you ChrissieL. for looking out this reference, it is much appreciated. I will note it down in my research log and follow it up, see if it leads to further clues

Not having much luck I’m afraid but there is a Jane Clark charwoman born 1823 who died 15 May 1862.

Spital Cemetery Chesterfield

Sorry I don’t know areas in Derbyshire but this Jane would be around in 1861 to check out.

Nothing else obvious with Chaddesden birthplace  :-\

Did she have siblings to check out to see if she was with them?  You have probably tried that.

Thank you for looking Milliepede, I will check out the possibility.
I have traced most of her siblings through a number of census and unfortunately she hasn't appeared in any of them. I am continuing to cast my net quite wide with the family to see if there are any clues available

The Find a Grave site is useful but does not replace the MI transcriptions which were often done 30 years or so ago. I recall being able to read the inscriptions on graves at Danby and Lythe 30 years back which 15 years later I could not read due to erosion - or is it my eyesight.

Agreed! I have found my copy of the Monumental Inscriptions for the Old Church. The 'Jillson' angle does seem a lot more promising and likely. Looking at the inscriptions, I don't think the Henry and Ann Jillson, who are in the adjacent grave to the Barnards are Mary Barnards parents, they are already buried with a daughter called Mary who died in 1806. I will keep digging with this info in mind. Thank you for the suggesting this new perspective to investigate

I was curious as to which St Stephens church they were buried at so checked in the MI booklets which are published by the East Yorkshire FHS.
Your Richards are buried by the old church.
Have you got a copy of the MIs? Well worth getting as memorial stones often mention members of the family who died in other places and also can confirm parent children relationships. BARNARD surnames at both old and new churches. JILLSON at the old church.
The MI for the Richard BARNARD who died in 1848 mentions daughters Mary Jane and Ann who died in infancy, Son William Barry who drowned in the Thames 29 August 1864 aged 25 years and his wife Isabella who died 29 March 1865 aged 25. Richard's wife Margaret died 10 Sep 1869 age 70.

I have occasionally found that families group their graves together and it may be significant that the grave of the Richard who died in 1854 (and his wife) are listed just before a grave of a JILLSON family.

Thank you Spelk, I think I have this same booklet so will dig that out and have a look. I have previously visited Old St Stephens to record the MI (pre-it being on Find a grave). It gave me Mary's name but no other relatives. It definitely sounds like an avenue to follow up and one which I had missed. Many thanks for your time on this.

John Jellson/Jelson/Jilson Barnard was born 18th November 1811 and baptised 17th February 1812.

There is also a record for a Richard Barnard at Fylingdales born 4th October 1810 and baptised 14th October 1810 - abode Bay.

There are several images relating to these 2 baptisms on FindMyPast.

Thank you for this rosie99. I have taken a look at the records and it seems quite likely that this Richard is the son of the Richard and Mary I am trying to track down. After looking at some of the other comments in this thread and doing some quick searches, the Richard born in 1810 was also likely a mariner so I will be chasing that lead up too.

Many thanks for your time in looking this information out. It is much appreciated

Two Richard Barnards born Robin Hood Bay on FindMyPast's merchant seamen records - both linked to the Amity amongst other vessels.
Lloyd's register has more ships named Amity than you can shake a stick at. Also, newspapers have plenty of "Amity, Barnard" sailings'
Have you checked seamen's records?

Thank you hanes teulu, I have just been reviewing my research logs for the family. I have done quite a bit of research around the ships that Richard and his son William worked on between 1842 and 1851 (for Richard) and until 1858 for William. I have been unable to locate a Masters Certificate for Richard however his Register Ticket number is: 126.794

Previous to these dates I do not appear to have found records I felt confident enough to be the individuals above. I have located the records you referred to above, for the years 1835-1840. The DOB for the most likely candidate is 1791 which is five years out from my Richard. However the records for 1842-1851 are attributed to an individual born in 1785 so three years the other way. On reflection this could be the individual I am looking for and certainly warrants further investigation.

Many Thanks for your time looking into this for me. It is much appreciated.

There is a marriage on freebmd in 1847 Derbyshire for a Jane Clarke & Charles Frost

Thank you CaroleW, I have looked at the images for this marriage and I am doubtful that this is the correct Jane. This has Jane's father as 'John Clarke' a pot burner. My Jane's father is called William.

Thank you for looking this record out and letting me know though, it is another one to tick off the list as a possibility. Much appreciated
