Pity this thread seems to have petered out. I'm not descended from Bertrams, but my 4 x great-grandfather Joseph Stephenson is buried in Yester churchyard in Gifford, and the adjacent headstone is for William Bertram who died in 1798 aged 49. He may be the son of the James Bertram and Mary Murray mentioned above.

My Joseph Stephenson had a nephew also called Joseph Stephenson, surgeon in Duns, who married an Isabella Bertram from Cranshaws in Berwickshire, where Bertrams farmed for hundreds of years. Their son John Bertram Stephenson became a chemist in George Street, Edinburgh.

Blimey, I believe you have found a link I have been searching for. This William Bertram is most likely the son of James Bertram & Mary Murray.  I have only recently started my research and found many family trees linking Mary Murray to Alexander Murray 4th Baron Elibank. I don't think this is correct as by all accounts this Mary Murray died without ever having married or having children.  Looking for the correct Mary Murray has just been one brick wall after another.
