I agree with you all.  Standing in front of my GG grandmother and GG grandfather's grave, reading the words, seeing where in the churchyard they were buried and how grand the stone was (middling) gave me more of a feel for the sort of people they were.  It did bring them more to life (metaphorically).

Nearby is the plaque to those of the parish that fell in WW1.  Their grandson (my grand uncle) is there and they were still alive when he was killed.  I knew he was killed 1st day of the Somme but seeing his name on the plaque it became personal, and I started to think about what they felt and how the news reached them.  Now a trip to the Somme and Thiepval Memorial is being planned.

Thanks Bulsara

There's a large gravestone to a group of Twyman's in St Peters churchyard apparently (I've seen pictures).  They're all my rellies.  One day I'll get down there.  To have a look I mean, not to join them. :D

I see, its not a simple matter of "Thanet is separate from the rest".  Its "which part of Thanet are you from?" ;)

Well most of mine are Minster/Monkton, but one of those at least came over from Petham/Lower Hardres (south of Canterbury), and they then migrated to Margate.  Another lot came from Woodnesborough (near Sandwich) via Cliffs End and then St Lawrence. :D

They all finally ended up in St Peters, until my grandfather "escaped".  I was born in Portsmouth!  :-[

What do the runes tell us about all that? ???

The confidence that made you talk about "pure blood" and "foreigners"??
What do you say about us Thanet people then? ;)

Thanks for clarifying that Bill.  You must be a Man of Kent.   :D
I see from your names that none of them match with mine (I'm just about to add mine to my profile).  That's probably the Thanet for you.   ;D

The Lighter Side / Re: Why did you choose your Rootschat name?

Another new boy here, this is the best topic I have browsed so far.  (Far more interesting than finding our ancestors)!!  I started with Graham in Reading because that's exactly who I am and what I'm signed up as on another forum.

But that's boring compared with the rest of you.  Like someone said earlier in the thread, pick a new identity and invent a life.  Well, I'll see how I go, but for now I'll play safe-ish and change it to Captain, which has been my nickname for 30 years.

Lots of us called Graham, and I was always the one who organised the annual canal holiday, so....

Next week I might be someone different again.

Kent / Kentish Man or Man of Kent

I see one of you out there is called Man of Kent.  Can you answer the question, which is which.  I've always assumed Man of Kent is east of the Medway, and Kentish Man is west of (in other words its more London but its Kent-ish.)  ;)

But that's probably completely wrong.  :-\

My ancestors are Thanet anyway, so they are a separate breed apart are they not?   ???

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Do you record re-marriages?
« on: Sunday 30 July 06 22:19 BST (UK)  »
I'd say recording 2nd, 3rd, all known marriages is essential.  Even non-marriages.   ??? What?  Well I have one of my G-grandfathers who never married my g-grandmother, although they had one child - my grandmother.  ??? What's unusual about that?  Well because we think he was still married at the time, to someone else and had three children with HER.
All that info is essential to putting his life together.

I presume you are the chap in charge of the whole thing.  I've just joined and trying to get the hang of things.
I'd like to know how we get to talk specifically to another member.  For example, if I find that someone is researchnig exactly the same person as me, might be a 2x/3x/4x grandparent thus making that person my 3rd/4th/nth cousin.  Want to share info with them but its not really ALL for public consumption.
We can't put our own email addresses on the post so how do we do it?  Can't find the answer in the help screens, sorry if its there.
Thanks
Graham
