World War One / Re: SHIP - WHITBY ABBEY AT GALLIPOLI
« on: Friday 07 November 25 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
My great Uncle, a South African served on the ship. I have a picture of him with a few crew members and a painting of the ship obviously commissioned after the war on his return.

I came across this thread as I have been researching the Whitby Abbey which my grandfather served on from November 1916 until the end of the war. His name was James Cooper and he was part of the RNR. Previously he had been on the crew of HMS Amethyst which took part in the Dardanelles campaign in 1915.

And my grandfather is one of the crew members in the photograph that Brendan Guy posted in April 2020. He is the sailor standing on the left. I am basing this on the attached photo which was taken in 1912 when he was in the RNR in his home of Shetland.

Would be great if anyone else has potential info on the sailors in this photo. And would love to know where it was taken.
