Hi Car,
My 2 x Great grandfather, Charles Patrick O'Callaghan was born about 1822 - 1881 I cannot find a birth record for him, but I have for the rest of the family. His father was Patrick Callaghan bap 14 Sep 1799 Ballymore Eustace, Wicklow - 1857 Baltinglass Wicklow) who was a farmer in Baltinglass Wicklow and later listed as a Linen Manufacturer on Charle's Marriage Cert.  Patrick married Margaret Mahon ( 1802 - 1879). I am trying to re-find the record, but I am sure it was around 1821. They then had Charles, John (11 Jan 1824 - 1900  South Australia), Ellen (10 Apr 1825 - ) James Joseph 17 Mar 1828 - 1898 South Australia), Patrick (1829 - ) Thomas (1831- ) Henry (1838 - 1858 South Australia. They were all born in Baltinglass Wicklow. I have DNA matches with descendants of the families who came to Australia.
Charles had moved to Southampton in the 1840's as he had possibly worked for Ordnance Survey in Ireland. Their premises at the Tower of London had been affected by fire and they moved their HQ to Southampton in the early 1840's. I cannot find what happened to his brother Patrick but it is quite possible he moved to England as well due to the Potato Famine. Many of Charle's family worked for Ordnance Survey. Charles is buried in the Old Cemetery on Southampton Common. B10 Plot. 275
The O in front of Callaghan means, I believe to mean descendent of. Some families used it and some went by the surname Callaghan.
