The Common Room / Re: CHAT ROOM - the ROOTSCHATTERBOX
« on: Tuesday 28 November 06 18:51 GMT (UK)  »
I use the chatroom alot, nearly every day. I too was very scared when I first went in, especially when everyone jumps at you and says hello as soon as you pop in! I must admit I ran away the first time! I had never used a chat room before.

But now I use it for a chat to friends I have made in there, and if I get stuck I know someone in there will help me. Everyone in the chat room was new once, and remembers how it feels to be new. No one expects anyone to be a genius at computers or at chatting. Just go in there and watch for a few times. Go at your own pace, it's not a race. Relax, and when you feel ready, jump in with a question. They wont bite!! They love to help if they can.

Go on, give it a go!

Remember, they don't know who you are if you do make a mistake!!

Cya in there,

Red    ;D

Good to see you are doing well Red.

Are you still practicing those bits i taught you?

Lanarkshire / Re: baffled by scotlandspeople

Have to say i am beginning to agree with you.

I have only recently started on my Scottish side and i am finding it much harder and also far more costly. Feel like giving up on it myself for the moment.

Inverness / Re: Inverness census Parishes
« on: Wednesday 22 November 06 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
I too am having a problem with trying to determine which parish a certain village/area is in.

I can see that Culcabock is in modern day Inverness but i am trying to determine which of the Inverness parishes it belongs too as Inverness itself appears to be subdivided particularly around 1859.

Anyone have any ideas?

Technical Help / Re: family pics DVD wont work on all players
« on: Wednesday 13 September 06 14:47 BST (UK)  »
As stated above some DVD players only accept  DVD-R or DVD+R media rather than both formats.

But you will often find that some DVD players will not accept ANY kind of recordable DVD media. In these cases you are usually better of using a CDR rto make a videoCD (VCD) with the main downside being the smaller capacity.

I assume you have/will make a copy of the pictures before you deface them.

Technical Help / Re: PC fan keeps coming on ................
« on: Friday 08 September 06 16:14 BST (UK)  »
I would have to agree with Downside's diagnosis.

Most average household PC's have the fan run at a constant speed UNLESS there is an option in the BIOS to have fanspeed control turned on at certain levels.

Tomkin

Here goes

I have increased my memory to 448.mb
I had 192 and have had a further 256 put in. Certainly has made a difference although when I first turned on the dreaded virtual low memory message flashed up. !!!
The guy said he thinks the reason for the slow boot up is because although I have installed a new hard drive, mother board, windows xp  my processor is still as it was 1.10ghz and he said he can put me a new processor in to up grade if I want, be about £30 .He said it should then run for about another 3 yrs no problem and no need to get a new computer its fine.So I'm quite pleased and may consider this for the near future. I also asked him to remove the un necessary processes and he said he would so will have a look at that  shortly.

He said there was some spy ware on which he took off don't quite no what that was, said it can come in on search bars or something. Any way thanks to one and all. I enjoyed reading all your comments. I have now started a new Thread on the lighter lighter side about memories of school days in the 40s nd 50s. may see you there. !!!

Erin

I would definitely have recommended the increase in RAM as it was really low to be as 192mb (i suspect it was less than that as you probably have shared memory with an integrated videocard).  If all you do is surf the net then the processor is fine for now.

As for spyware - you should download Adaware or Spybot Search & Destroy and learn to use them as they are both invaluable tools.
