I'm researching an ancestor of mine, George Morgan, who was baptised 23 April 1665 in Ludlow, Shropshire. He died on 1 November 1699 in Clunbury, where he had moved later in life. I'm trying to learn more about where in Ludlow the Morgans lived, and ideally, what George or his father may have done for work.

George was the son of:

George Morgan Sr., born 1633 in Bishop’s Castle, died 1692 in Ludlow

Elinor (maiden name unknown), born 1635, died 6 January 1681 in Ludlow

George Jr. married Sarah Weaver, b. around 1670 somewhere in Shropshire, who outlived him by many decades and died in 1762 in Clunbury.

I’ve already located the baptisms, burials, and basic family tree information via parish registers, but I’d love to go deeper and try to find:

- Any references to residence, occupation, or social status (e.g. freemen/burgess rolls, hearth tax records, wills)
- Whether there are any Ludlow borough records, manorial rolls, or other documents from this time period that mention the family

I’d be incredibly grateful if anyone with access to local resources or knowledge of Ludlow’s 17th-century records could point me in the right direction or even check for references to the Morgans in surviving documents.

Thanks so much!

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Carole. You're right that the 1939 Register doesn’t list birthplaces, my mistake there. I had seen “Pitsburg” listed alongside Maud’s name in a transcription elsewhere, and it seems I’ve confused that with the 1939 entry, easily done. The 1921 census definitely does record “Pitsburg” as her birthplace, and as mentioned in my post, that’s what I’m working from in trying to trace her early life in the U.S. Thanks.

This is my original post actually, and I've cross-posted following RootsChat's guidance to post on both Staffordshire and Pennsylvania boards given Maud's life spanned both regions. Thanks anyway for taking the time to respond.

Hello all,

*Cross-Posting in hopes of help!*
I’m looking for help tracing the origins of Maud Alice Jones, born 15 July 1874 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to British parents. At some point, she returned to the UK, where she married in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1893 and lived the rest of her life in West Bromwich.

On UK records:

The 1921 census says she was a British subject by birth
The 1939 Register lists her birthplace as “Pitsburg” (which I'm taking to be a misspelling of Pittsburgh, PA)

Her father is named as Joseph Jones, a retired miner, on her UK marriage certificate and I’ve had no luck finding a U.S. birth or baptism record for her, or anything on her parents in Pittsburgh. I’m wondering if anyone here knows about:

Church records or early baptisms in Pittsburgh around 1874
British families temporarily in Pennsylvania for mining work
Passenger lists or return journeys to the UK before 1893

Any suggestions or info would be very gratefully received.

Full details (including UK info) posted here on the Staffordshire board:

Hello all,

I’ve hit a brick wall and would really appreciate any help or fresh eyes.

I’m trying to trace more about my ancestor Maud Alice Jones, who was born on 15 July 1874 in Pittsburgh, USA. She later came to the UK (date unknown) and married my 2x great-grandfather Richard Cooper on 25 December 1893 in Tipton, Staffordshire (St Martin’s Church).

Maud and Richard settled in West Bromwich, where they raised 8 children: Maria, William (my direct ancestor), Mary Jane, Leonard, Doris Maud, Elizabeth, Lily, and James. Maud died in 1946 in West Bromwich.

I know from the 1921 UK census that she is listed as being British born, and the 1939 Register gives her birthplace as "Pitsburg" (which I take to be a misspelling of Pittsburgh). This suggests her parents were British citizens living temporarily in the USA.

The only information I have about her parents is from her marriage certificate, which lists her father as Joseph Jones, a retired miner. I have no information about her mother, and I haven’t found a definitive birth or baptism record for Maud in the USA or UK. I also don’t know if she had any siblings.

So far I’ve searched:

U.S. birth records for Pittsburgh (though Pennsylvania didn’t officially record births until 1906)
Passenger lists (UK and US)
UK and US census records
Parish records in Staffordshire
Variations of her name (Maude, Maud A., etc.)

If anyone can help me:

Find a baptism or birth record for Maud
Trace Joseph Jones and where in the UK he was from
Identify her mother

Or suggest where else I might look...
… I’d be incredibly grateful!

Thank you so much for reading and for any suggestions you may have!
