Down / Joseph Devlin Newry 1910 - 1954
« on: Sunday 03 August 25 23:08 BST (UK)  »
I am helping the grandson of Joseph Devlin piece together his grandfathers life. Joseph Devlin was born on 25th November 1910 in the Newry Workhouse to a Lizzie Devlin aged only 14. Joseph, aged around 11 and a half, was sent via the courts for truancy to St Patrick’s Industrial School in Belfast until he was 16, then he was sent to John Bannon Farm in Ballyconnell County Cavan. He is later found in 1936 marrying Bridget Hughes and starting a family. He died at home 97 Dromalane Park from his war injuries, a metal plate in his head, on 19th July 1954. If any can help with any of this story and help piece together Joseph's life we would very much appreciate it. Thank you in anticipation.

I'm posting this on behalf of Wayne Devlin the grandson of Joseph Devlin. I am assisting Wayne find info on his grandad.

I’m trying to trace information about a farm in Toberlyon (also spelled Toberlion), County Cavan, that was run by a man named John Bannon in the 1920s. My grandfather, Joseph Devlin, was sent there at age 16 in 1926 after leaving St Patrick’s Industrial School in Belfast.

Joseph was born in Newry Workhouse in 1910 and committed to St Patrick’s as a child. In 1926, he was released and sent across the border to County Cavan to work on this Bannon farm. I’m hoping someone might help me:

Identify the exact farm or location of the Bannon property in or near Toberlyon/Toberlion Share any records or family information relating to the Bannon family in that area Help me understand the process by which boys from Northern institutions were sent to work in the South, especially during the delicate post-Civil War period (1926) — was this common?

I have census information confirming a Catholic John Bannon (b. ~1843) living in Toberlyon in 1911, married to Margaret, with children including Patrick, Bridget, Mary E, Joseph, and Alice.

If anyone has any leads, local knowledge, old maps, or advice on how I might uncover more about Joseph’s time there, I would be deeply grateful.

Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions you can offer.

Warm regards,
Wayne Devlin

Thank you so much.
I see that one of you specialises in Co. Cavan! A young Joseph was sent age 16 straight from St Patrick’s Industrial School in Belfast to a John Bannon who had a farm in Ballyconnell in County Cavan. Any idea how I can gain info on that? It would have been around 1926

We have possible records that Joseph Devlin born 25 Nov 1910 in Newry, was in Barrow-in-Furness around 1930. we know he was there in 1938/39 but new evidence points to him being there as early as 1930. can anyone help collaborate this by confirming his residence in or around Barrow-in-Furness in the early 1930s? thank you very much indeed.

Im assisting a lovely gentleman trying to trace his grandfather Joseph P Devlin. Joseph was born 25th November 1910 in Newry, Northern Ireland. Joseph served in the TA and was an ARP Warden in Barrow-in-Furness before signing up for the Royal Artillery in 1939/1940. It is the TA part of his life story he is trying to find. There is some evidence to say Joseph was in the TA in the King's Own Royal Regiment. Can anyone help piece this part of the story together? Thank you in advance. The reason I want to help this man find his grandfather is because he is a wonderful human being who has raised millions for charity. helped countless people and asked for nothing in return. I want to do this for him. Thank you
