I think it maybe a girl because she does not have much hair to hold a ribbon maybe the reason why there are no ribbons. I have a picture of my mother in law born 1911 and she is with her brother born over a year before her and she has a similiar outfit on. Her brother has a suit on but with a lace collar. Good luck Irene

Thank you so very much for taking the trouble to reply. I went to the records office in Bancroft Road and saw the entry in the directory for Charles Hermann, hairdresser. My gt.gdf can be found at the address mentioned in the 1901 census. I am hoping that when I can get to Kew(I live in Norfolk)there may be a copy of an Indenture that he completed to serve his apprenticeship, you never know. Thank you again for your help. Many thanks Irene

Hi there Shriley - sorry I have not replied to you sooner. I have had a busy time of late and have not been online much. Thanks you so much for checking out my ancestors. I have not been able to find the marriage of Alice and Charles/Otto Hermann. Perhaps they never married. I am going to try to go to Bancroft Road and see if they have any more details on Charles. He had a hairdressers on the Isle of Dogs and paid rates ect so they may some information on him. I really appreciate you looking for me. Many thanks Irene

Thanks Shirley - Binner is the wrong line. I went there and bought the certificates thinking it was a connection because he married Alice Stroud.

My ancestor is Charles Hermann in the 1901 census at 6 Manilla Street. Poplar . On the first child born in 1892 it states father Otto Hermann and Alice Stroud as parents. My grandfather born 1899 the names of parents has changed to Charles Hermann and Alice Stroud.

What I am desparate for is the wedding certificate because I cannot tie up the family that Alice Stroud came from. I do not know Hermann's German name (that is why I cannot find the certificate)- why did he start off Otto and then become Charles. In the 1901 census he state he is a british subject. Was this from the marriage or did he get nationalized . Did they ever get married? I will keep plugging away. Thanks for your time. Regards Irene

Thanks Shirley - I have been looking for a longtime and cannot find them.
Charles Hermann/Alice Stroud. I think perhaps Charles had changed his name but may have married in his German name which I do not know.
I think they may have married around 1891 at Hoxton Old Town Shoreditch or around that area because that is where their first child is born Feb 1892. On that birth certificate father is Otto Hermann, my grandfather who is born later father is Charles Hermann.
I have purchased 2 wedding certificates in desparation.
Alice Stroud to Benjamin Amsden Biner August 1890 but Biner was not German.
Alice Greaves to Otto Reinhold Haus Herrmann May 1890 think Alice may have been married before but no her father was named Greaves as well and not Stroud.
Perhaps Charles/Otto and Alice never married or married much later.
Alice is Herman on the death certificate.
Very frustrating because I cannot tie up the right Alice Stroud or find out Charles German name. Another pair of eyes looking at this would be great. They are together in the 1901 census. Charles states he is a british subject born in Germany. Any help would be much appreciated. Best wishes Irene

I was wondering if there was a place that Germans that married in England had to inform someone. I am thinking about my ancestors marraige around 1891 that I cannot find and looking for somewhere where I could find details of their marriage.
My gt. gdf was German and his wife English. Any ideas?
Regards Irene
