This is a really useful site for checking if any direct or indirect ancestors were killed in mining accidents. Being such a hazardous occupation, if mining is in your family history the chances are there has been an accident in your history at some point. It's particularly useful for Northumberland and Durham although the coverage is wider.

The information is very rich and from just speculatively checking a surname, I was able to find a relative, a newspaper obituary about the accident, and then go and find their gravestone in the graveyard listed on this website, which was erected by colleagues from the mine.
