Soooooo helpful! When I found the names Joannis/Joannes/Margareta I thought perhaps my brick wall was starting to crumble. Another false path. From the sounds of things I may actually have reached the end of being able to find documentation for another generation of our Irish Melvin Clan.

You're right, all US records indicate names of John and Mary Melvin. Will do research on other kids born here. Birth records often list mother's maiden name.

I'm happy to be on this board, just in case other research/knowledge pops up. Lots of research for me to do based on new information I can look for on other Ancestry trees.

Thank you so much for your input! It has definitely corrected my heading off into the wrong direction.

I'm going to list John Melvin's birthplace as Galway. I appreciate you moving my inquiry about him to Galway board. It places both him and his wife, now documented as Many, in close proximity.

I've got a lot of cleanup to do on my tree to incorporate new informations.

Blessings,
liane

I'm so appreciative for all your input. Please bear with me as I've never used a message board before. The big thing is I can’t figure out to individually reply to posts when there are multiple following each vs reply button for only the latest.

Part of the confusion is the Irish source records have a variety of names as I've found the source documentation that ties to other information we know. (All consistently John Melvin from Immigration records and US records.) I have documented the persons in the John Melvin Tree from the present all the way back to the oldest John Melvin that I'm for your help on now.

My source for John's birth in Connaught Bridge comes from Family Search ID #LVMN-P43. It would be awesome to find him in a place in Galway nearby. Then hopefully I could find his parents. My hesitation comes from family lore that the Melvins originally came from Scotland, and the Celtic translation was Ó Maoil Mhín. This came from my deceased husband who first learned back in the 1960s - 1970s. (Long before there was an internet.) Immigration and all US census records consistently list his birthplace as "Connaught Ireland." Once we found the information above and I learned his birthplace was Connaught Bridge, I have been trying to work back from there. Perhaps they were originally from Northern Ireland immigrated south with him arriving in Galway? I've not had any luck with that path.

Likewise we had their marriage from a Family Search record. However, the transcription showed the names as John Melville and Mary Money. The link you sent indicates this error may have sent me in the wrong direction, but witness Peter Maney affirms the correct name is Mary Maney.

I’ve made my Ancestry John MELVIN Family Tree public so you can see my research.

I've made our tree "public" so you can see all the information, including Family Search references.

Thank you for research on all our Melvins, who came from Ireland and immigrated to the US. Having access to Catholic Parish records is really clarifying facts. I started my John MELVIN Family Tree on Ancestry based on family records and then US sources. Several years ago I upgraded my membership to the international subscription and began getting additional information...

Since then we did find Ancestry was wrong about daughter Margaret Mary... Not born in New York City, found by my helper in the same Parish records you found.

You're also helping me with John Melvin and have posted questions for me. Would it be helpful to send you an invite to my tree in ancestry? Then you can see all my sources.

What you have also clarified son John's birthday and another first born son. Please check to see if you have dealth records for Michael. He never immigrated to the US with the family.

Liane again,

The marriage record I have is from the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915. She married John Melville on 30 April 1844 in Kiltullagh, Ireland.

Thank you so much for your quick response!

The family tree I created is on Ancestry and I previously had an Irish genealogist helping me try to break through my John Melvin "brick wall."

I have a Family Search ID number documenting his birth. But I don't know how to "search by ID" in that software. (I do have an account and have read the help info. So, I know all about the function of an ID. But none of the examples shows how to search by ID.)

From the Ireland, Catholic Parish Registers, 1655-1915, I do have John Melville's marriage record to Mary Money, which took place in Kiltullagh, Ireland on 30 April 1844. Also in Kiltullagh, documentation for birth of 2 Irish born children (all from Family Search.) Shortly thereafter they immigrated to America.

I have a marriage record that says Mary was married to John Melville on 30 Apr 1844 in Kiltullagh.  I'm looking for her birth information, hoping to identify her parents.

I am looking for birth information in Connaught Bridge Kildare. This ancestor is my "brick wall" so I'm trying to locate his parents' names.
