Thank you for this information, I’m in Australia myself but rest assured I’ll pass this information on to my members. As you say, the headstone being sandstone could be problematic, one of our experts may still be able to give it a clean. Once again, thank you for the information provided, the photos will come in handy to the members. 😀

Many thanks again for your help, we have someone who hopefully can repair the headstone, another who cleans and can re gild it.

Hello again, thank you so much for your advice. One other thing, would you happen to know the exact location of this gravesite, I have members who are very keen to restore this headstone. Once again, thank you, any information is appreciated.

Hello Lodger, not used to this site, can’t see a clear area to reply, hope this is it. 😊 Anyway, the headstone you talk about for Thomas Hastie, Scots Guards, do you still have a photo of it pre damaged? I’m Admin for facebook page, “Scots Guards Pictorial II” members there are looking at the possibility of getting it restored. Thank you.

Hi Dave,
There are a few MUIRHEAD stones but this is the only one that fits your description.
Since I transcribed it back in 1983 it has been broken and the reverse side is not visible.

The transcription differs a little from the actual picture, this is because there was no other means of transcribing but by using paper, pencil and my old Remington typewriter. I followed the guidelines set down by the Scottish Genealogy Society for transcriptions of stones, using Father - Mother - children style, all relationships were to the first name on the list. This is a two-sided stone, the side now hidden is the oldest one.

"Thomas Muirhead died 11th February 1896 aged 62 years. His wife Elizabeth Hastie died 4th March 1900 aged 60 years. Their son Thomas, corporal 1st Battalion Scots Guards died 13th March 1882 aged 24 years. Janet Muirhead died 20th August 1905 aged 80 years".
Reverse side of this stone -
"Erected by John Muirhead and Elizabeth Hamilton in memory of their son John who 6th January 1828 in his 1st year. Their son John died 8th December 1843 aged (...). Elizabeth Hamilton died 24th May 1848 aged 54 years. John Muirhead died 8th August 1867 aged 70 years".

There may be other information about this burial plot in the records, if it's the one you're looking for just let me know and I'll see what else I can find.
