Hi RosscoL

I am sorry I did not see your requests until now. Am I correct in understanding that you are a descendent of Jessy Munro Thomson?

I am writing a booking in which she figures, so it would be good to get in touch with you.

Moderators, can you help us make a connection?

Thanks and best wishes

I have just found some more documents
1. An attestation by Charles Dallas dated 16th February 1828 that he was present in November 1819 when Sir Thomas Munro visited Capt and Mrs Ward in Shrewsbury and acknowledged Jessy as his daughter, afterwards sending her a present of a bible.
2. A short account by Richard Taylor (I think a lawyer) that he attended Jessy's and James's wedding on 26th September 1833 and that Mrs Ann Ward, her former foster Mother, was well.
3. An Indenture dated 23rd September 1833 between Jessy Thomson, James Crewe and the Munro trustees authorising the continuation of her annuity of £100 a year for life to her independently of her husband. I attach a picture of page 3 of this with the signatures and seals. Ann Ward signs as a witness. it confirms that the handwriting of the letter was Jessy's, but I think the date of that letter must be earlier than I said, possibly 1832. If the family would like it I could photograph the whole Indenture but it would be easier to transmit this by an email attachment rather than the reduced quality of the RootsChat attachment.

Can we exchange emails?

Best wishes

Thanks - yes ashanakan was my pretentious other signature.

Thanks for passing it on. I have just taken a photo of the only letter from Jessy in the collection. It sits by me on the desk as I write. It was to the Trustees of Sir Thomas Munro's estate. It is very tidy but I think that as the signature is in the same hand it is actually written by her. She would have been 24. The black rim to the paper is because it is announcing the death of her guardian. Amazing!

This is my transcription:

Holliwell [now Holywell] Terrace
Abbey Foregate
Shrewsbury
Oct 25th

I hope you will pardon the liberty I take in writing to inform you of the loss I sustained by the death of Captain Ward who always treated me with parently care and was to me a father. The widow of the late Capt Ward intends remaining at her present residence and I should like “with your permission” to continue with her. Accept my sincere thanks for the interest you have taken and the kindness you have [?] shewn to me and which I trust I shall always remember with heartfelt gratitude. With every sentiment of respect, Permit me to subscribe myself
Your obliged and grateful Servt

Hello you people. I don't know how long this request has been up there but I know all about the early life of Jessey Munro Scott Thomson of Shrewsbury. In fact she figures in a talk I am giving for the Scottish Historical Society in Edinburgh at their 2025 conference.

Jessy was the illegitimate daughter of Sir Thomas Munro, and Jessy McQuorcadel of 423 Lawnmarket Edinburgh. Born 1809, she was taken away by agreement between both her parents to be fostered by Samuel Ward. I have the whole story of the embarrassment surrounding her birth. She had an annuity from Sir Thomas of £100 a year, was specifically catered for in his will and was, I think, well treated, although other historians disagree.

It is really lovely to hear your part of her story, some of which I didn't know.

Best wishes to all
