Hi Sue
Thank you very much for sharing.
This is very timely! 🙂

Two days ago I discovered where Katie Curtis (murdered woman) was buried, and as well not in a cemetery with a grave marked either.

Was hoping to visit the area this weekend except weather is rainy. Not expecting a marked grave nor a mound.

Wonder if Andrew Frost and team would venture this far north and at what cost 🤔

A story in the Victorian news today
Won't actually help your quest, but solved a similar resting place mystery for one family.

Yes Ed, it’s very sad to think that this could be the case…  :'(

If I find anything else I’ll post back on this chat.

Hi Erin
Have you found the details for Bridget, Margaret and other siblings you were seeking?

I think I have seen your name on Ancestry as I was assembling my family tree 😊

Carmel

The 3 daughters that I mentioned who are on the 1901 census are different to the ones that you have provided and I had found also. These are 3 additional  daughters , I think. They are 10 years older than the original set (Anne died 7 months, Cornelius 7 months, Ellen 1 month).
Older siblings James Matthew, Kate Mary and Mary (whose birth records I don't have ) came to Australia. Admiittedly I cannot find any deaths for Margaret(1869)  and Bridget(1865) BUT could they both be so wrong with ages? Oddly enough they are both different to the Margaret and Bridget  census by about the same 9 ish years!!!
Helena , I cannot find any Civil or familysearch record for. do you know if all records are digitised?

I am wondering what I could do next to try and clarify. Picking your brain!

Hi Ed & Judith

Bit the bullet and purchased a death certificate for Charles Grant yesterday, and it says he was buried at Biboohra!

I asked the lady at the Mareeba Historical society this morning about this and she said while there wasn’t an official cemetery, one day when she was cleaning up around 5 family graves there (think they may be Petersons buried at a private Biboohra cemetery listed on Findagrave) someone mentioned to her that several people (think she said 20-30) were also buried in the nearby paddock that had cattle in it.
She says she looked where they said, but unfortunately due to cattle being there no mounds were present, ie, the ground was flat).
And potentially Charles may have been buried on a private property too.
It was summer and without refrigeration in FNQ (and the state of his body) would have required he be buried asap.

My sister and I won’t give up finding out about it though so we may reply in the future.

If you ever come across any further details regarding Charles and Kate Sargent Grant, please let us know.

It looks like (from an Electoral Roll) Kate stayed in the Carriers Arms Hotel, Mareeba in 1913, a year before her death. So to find any further info - such as if she had purchased property etc would be great to know as well.

Hi Judith
Thank you very much for contacting them! At least that has been confirmed.

I was contemplating ordering a death certificate for Charles, so knowing it should contain burial details will save a bit of footwork!

Think I'll still meet with the local historical lady as she may be able to answer other questions. Thank you so much for your help :)

I contacted the Mareeba Shire Council for a search  of all the local cemeteries
..lovely lady rang me back to say  there are no burial details for Charles Grant.

However a copy of his death certificate should say place of burial

Regards Jenn

Hi Ed
Thank you very much for reply and the warm welcome!

Yes, I have keen interest now to know the burial place of Charles.

On Saturday I'm going to chase up the local historical society group leader as she apparently has a wealth of local knowledge. I wondered too about a Clohesy River burial, seeing Katie was living there (and I found that a Clohesy River goldfield was established there about the same time).

However it did say in a Trove newspaper article that Charles' body was railed to Myola (near Kuranda) and was put into a coffin there. It would be backtracking to return to Clohesy but is still possible.

There is only one recorded grave at Myola, which is of a farmer who took his own life and was buried on his own property. And my sister yesterday looked at Old Smithfield (north Cairns) Cemetary's burials but alas he wasn't amongst those either - neither Cairns Pioneer cemetary nor listed at the Mareeba Pioneer cemetary, where his wife Kate is buried of course....

So it will be interesting when his grave is finally found. I will update this chat when and if we do find it! Many thanks  :)

Hi Carsamus. Welcome to RootsChat

It has been awhile since I have looked at this family. About the only thing missing is the location of Charles grave . I suspect it is around Clohesy River but never recorded.
Good luck on your family research. It will be both frustrating and rewarding

Ed

Hi Judith
Many thanks for your detailed reply and the Qld State Library link!
Yes, it seems very difficult to ascertain where Charles Grant was buried. I’ve enquired of local historians whether there were other small (and now disused cemeteries in the area because no one lives at the settlements any longer) and am yet to hear back.
I may order his death certificate but as you said it doesn’t imply that it will have this information.

Death registration
Name   Charles Grant
Death Date   25 Feb. 1893
Death Place   Queensland
Registration Date   1893
Registration Place   Australia
Father   George Grant
Mother   Mary Jane Hobson
Registered 1893, 000768 page 9812

The account of his death can be read here
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/39445631

He was a witness in murder case at Clohesy Bridge in 1892
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/173496537

I cannot see a burial site for him.  I'm not very familiar with Qld registration certificates and the website does not imply that the place of burial is recorded, as it is in some other states.
https://www.slq.qld.gov.au/collections/family-history/whos-your-mob/births-deaths-and-marriages
Qld Death certificates may show: "name of deceased, sex, date of death, cause of death, place of death, age, occupation, residence, place of birth"

Hi Ed
I have just come across your post from 2011. And have started on the family genealogy trail two weeks ago!
Katherine “Kate” Sargent Grant was my father’s great aunt, and I live near where she and Charles Grant lived (Clohesy River) and live in the town she was buried in.

I cannot seem to find Charles Grant’s burial site, but I’m sure I will come across it eventually.

Are you aware of how he passed away?

If you are still looking for any further details, please let me know - even though I’m an absolute newbie I will do my best 😊
