US Lookup Requests / Re: Michael Doherty : Boston: help Please
« on: Monday 09 July 12 08:20 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I didn't find your Michael Doherty, however I did find Russell Street in the 1920 census. I've written down the family names so you could search for them in the 1930 in order to find Russell Street again. I searched through 5 districts before finding the closest address. Russell Street appears in several districts of Charlestown, off and on.

1920 Census
Boston, Suffolk County, MA
(3rd Ward, District 65 - Charlestown)

42 Russell Street

Daniel J. Doherty, age 30, single; b. MA, Parents b. MA
William P. Doherty, brother, age 28, single; b. MA, Parents b. MA
William T. White, Uncle, age 58, single; b. MA, Parents b. Ireland
John B. McEnroe, Brother-in-Law, age 32; married; b. MA, Parents b. MA
Catherine Doherty, Mother, age 61, widowed, b. MA, Parents b. Ireland
Margaret E. McEnroe, niece, age 6, b. MA
John B. McEnroe, nephew, age 5, b. MA
Daniel J. McEnroe, nephew, age 3 mos.; b. MA
Francis McEnroe, nephew, age 1 yr. & 11 mos.; b. MA

36 Russell Street: Patrick Herlihy (age 50) & Timothy Froley (age 48) families

34 Russell Street: Hugh Dempsey (age 41) and Michael Spellman (age 32) families

32 Russell Street: Mary Dean (age 56) family

Further information for the family at 42 Russell Street:

Name: John B McEnroe, age 24
Date of Marriage: 21 Jan 1912
Birth Date: 1888
Birthplace: Boston
Registration of Marriage: Boston, Massachusetts
Groom's Father: John J. McEnroe
Groom's Mother: Maria A. Flynn
Bride: Margaret E. Doherty
Bride's Father: Daniel J. Doherty
Bride's Mother: Katherine V. White

I didn't find 33 or 35 Russell Street. I did check the last two pages as that is where they enumerate households they missed - however I didn't find the person (or the address) you are searching, in the 1920.

Kate

Hi,

I am trying to determine who the parents were of Robert Hume. Would the name of at least his father be on a Cheshire marriage record from 1860, or both parents? I am not too familiar with English vital records.

Robert HUME married Mary COOKSON - Great Boughton, Cheshire - July, August or Sept. of 1860.
A reference is given of volume 8a, page 482.

1871 census - Robert Hume is with wife Mary and 7 children in Cuddington, Cheshire. It states he was born at Long Melford, Suffolk.

1861 census - Robert Hume is with wife Mary & sister Mary Hume; parish of John the Baptist, Boughton ward, Chester. It states he was born at Long Melford, Suffolk.

1851 census - unable to locate Robert Hume.

1841 census - it is possible he is with parents named John and Sarah Hume at Long Melford, Suffolk ... Robert, age 7 yrs. old. That same Robert appears not to be with them in 1851.

Robert Hume
Born c. 1834 Long Melford, Suffolk
Married 1860 Great Boughton, Cheshire
Died 1890 Leeds, Yorkshire, aged 56 yrs. old

I realize I can write to request his marriage and death records (or view microfilm) but perhaps there is a book look-up, index or something else on-line which I may be unaware of.

Sorry so long! These are the details as I know them. Didn't want anyone else to duplicate efforts.

Many thanks in advance!
Kate

Canada / Re: Marriage in Newfoundland
« on: Friday 06 July 12 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi Mary,

If you believe you've exhausted every resource in obtaining records for Elizabeth Clarke Bennett in Halifax (or wherever she eventually settled), then all you have to work with is the William Clarke (and Susannah) name. I'm assuming you found the names from the 1871 edition of Lovell's Directory? I had found this one: William Clarke, fisherman at Gullys, in the District of Brigus ( http://ngb.chebucto.org/L1871/071-dist-idx.shtml )

Since St. Mark's is an Anglican Church in Halifax, begin with Anglican record research in Newfoundland.

For Brigus and Bay de Verde, contact:

Diocese of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador
Peter Chalker, Archivist
19 King’s Bridge Rd.
St. Johns, NL A1C 3K4
Tel.: 709-576-6697
Fax: 709-576-7122
archives@anglicanenl.net

For Port au Bras:

Diocese of Central Newfoundland
Synod Office
34 Fraser Road
Gander, NL A1V 2E8
Tel.: 709-256-2372
Fax: 709-256-2396

The above contact information is from:
Archives in the Anglican Church of Canada
http://www.anglican.ca/resources/gsarchives/incanada/

The family stories of drownings and early deaths seem common for many parts of NL in that era. If that occurred I'm sure she went to live with extended family. For some, their way out was to become a domestic servant in the larger cities, from St. John's, NL; to Halifax, NS; St. John's, NB or immigrate to Boston in the U.S.

I hope the archivist will be able to guide you in your research and that you'll find success!

Regards,
Kate

Hi Thombenn,

Do you know where in Newfoundland the marriage took place? Do you know which religious faith they belonged to?
That would be important information in order for them to check their church record microfilms they have in NL or for you writing to a particular parish or a diocese/synod.

The Memorial University of Newfoundland will conduct research (for a fee) and they do have surname files. I did check on-line at their website and they do have the Clarke surname. They also will search marriages which were gleaned from newspapers. Again, research fees would apply.

Marriages: 1810 - 1890

Research & Collections information
http://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/genealog.php

There are 3 Newfoundland newspapers on-line, one of which may cover the time-span you need to search. Look for The Newfoundlander (from St. John's; not all dates) at:

Best wishes,
Kate

United States of America / Re: Elizabeth Hill 1790 in Kentucky
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 16:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi californialife,

You would need to check the Hill surnames in Jefferson, KY during the time she was born. That would involve tax lists, deeds, Last Wills, court case files, pension applications, et al. Hopefully one of those will link a Hill family to your ancestor, with a mention of her.

This website mentions the surrounding counties of Jefferson, in case they were not directly from there:
http://genealogytrails.com/ken/jefferson/

You can ask for guidance about the documents held by these facilities:

Kentucky State Archives
http://kdla.ky.gov/Pages/default.aspx

Historical Society - Filson Library
http://www.filsonhistorical.org/

Jefferson County Clerk's Office, Louisville, KY
http://www.jeffersoncountyclerk.org/default.asp

Hopefully, either the archives or the library already have a surname file
and genealogies for Hill families from the area. That would be a nice break!

Best of luck ~
Kate

US Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage Look Up Please in Manhatten
« on: Tuesday 03 July 12 06:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi Kieran,

I checked the NY Times for their obituaries. For each (Helen & Henry - aka Harry Bradley), I checked the month they died and the month following their deaths, respectively. I didn't find anything.

The Newspaper Archive website says they have the New York Herald 1764 - 2004. That may or may not be true. If it is like the newspaper archive at Google, there may be large gaps. Newspaper Archive is a paid subscription site but they may offer a trial.
Newspaper Archive
http://newspaperarchive.com/

Genealogy Bank didn't come up with your Bradley names, at least when I tried it. They're a paid subscription site too, but I did a freebie search.
http://www.genealogybank.com/gbnk/obituaries/

The NY Public Library - ask them.
Bronx Library Center
http://www.nypl.org/locations/bronx-library-center
or the main branch ...
http://www.nypl.org/ask-nypl

The library has many newspaper holdings on microfilm. They do have the Bronx Press-Review, a weekly paper that has been around since 1940, on microfilm and should have the dates you need <1983:4:14-7:7,21-1985:4:11>
<1985:4:25-1989:12:28>. They also have the New York Daily News archive on microfilm.

And, hopefully, this volunteer is still active:

Obituary Look-up Volunteers, New York
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/volny.html

Look for "Barbara B." under New York county.

Best of luck Kieran!

Hi kevs005,

If your ancestor had a New York arrival you can check for his name at

Castle Garden (a free website):
http://www.castlegarden.org/

Be sure to use the wild card of an asterisk if you're not finding his full name, such as ...
Rud*
... in case the surname was misspelled.

Kate
