That’s great news.

Here is a family in 1911 - John Riley and spouse Margaret Shorrocks
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4MF-TML?lang=en

In 1881 and 1891, they have a son Henry with them. They had 10 children but none dead by 1911.

You can see baptisms on Lancs opc https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/
St Mary the Virgin Blackburn.
There is a great list of children but i think the ones with the address Peter Street, John Robert 1880, Joseph, 1881, Jonathan 1886 and Harry 1888 are a different family.

The marriage certificate would help re father.

Yeah I asked my grandad regarding Henry b. est.1876 about his siblings and he said that he's actually not sure - so I wouldn't rely on anything he said about Henry's siblings (if there are any), he might be confusing them with someone else.

I don't see Henry on the list of children here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4MF-TML?lang=en

Where are you seeing that?

I'll see if I can find the marriage records on the UK GRO - not done it before, will let you know what I find.

She was born 1902 with mother’s name Farrar so would be Henry’s sister.

1901 3873 /30/9
10 Leaver Street Burnley
Henry Riley 25yrs Hawker of Pots b Blackburn
Sarah A 22 yrs Cotton Weaver b Burnley

Now this is where it gets a bit difficult. You need to purchase the marriage record for
Henry Riley and Sarah Annie Farrar. They married at All Saints, Habergham Eaves but unfortunately those records do not seem to be online.
This would confirm Henry’s father’s details.

These sites can be helpful
https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
https://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

Thank you so much! Just spoke with my grandad about all this info and he confirmed the details. I'll look into getting the records about Henry Riley b. c1876. My grandad is telling lots of stories now - just triggered his memories :P

Glad you are back, James.
I think your family are mixing generations. I wrote earlier:

I don’t want to post wrong information but i wonder if this sequence is familiar?
Birth
1904 Henry Riley, Burnley - mother’s name Farrar

Marriage
1901 Henry Riley and Sarah Annie Farrar - Habergham Eaves

I haven’t posted any census details until you take a look.

There is this family in 1911
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X4MJ-FHN?lang=en

Everything here points towards them indeed being the ones! I was told they had a shop and sold things aswell. Not sure who Doris is - I'll ask my grandad if he recognises a Doris Riley.

Thanks for this :)

Edit: Just spoke to grandad and he says that Doris was infact Henry's sister and that it makes sense for the father to be called Henry also. Also my grandad is saying that his father was called Harry but he thinks his actual name was Henry who was born on 1904 which matches the records you've provided. Therefore, my g.grandad is Henry (not harry) born 1904 and my g.g.grandad also Henry was born est. 1876.

I don’t understand where the link is from the family amondg has posted to Lancashire, though.
In your earlier post, James, you wrote:
“My g.grandfather was Harry Riley [1904 - 27/02/1981]
My g.g.grandfather was Henry Riley who married Sarah Annie (Riley) in the 1920's”

Your great great grandfather would not be marrying in the 1920s, if his son, your great grandfather was born in 1904. Unless, of course, it was a second marriage.

Also, in this thread, you say your gt gt grandfather, Henry Riley was born 1886.
Do you have him in a census with his son, your ancestor?

Thank you for you message, no I haven't managed to find his census data yet, I asked my granparents for information and they were only able to give me a few pieces of info.

Henry Riley (they didn't know how his parents or his date of birth) only that he was married in the 1920s to Sarah Annie Riley. Henry had 8 siblings, 5 died, leaving two brothers and a sister. henry had two sons:
Walter Riley b.1913 d.1942 (died in WW2 Laconia Incident)
Harry Riley b.1904 d. Feb 27th 1981

They lived in Lancashire and had ancestors that lived in Accrington/Burnley area.

I'm going to talk through this feedback with my family later this week, as now I'm not sure if that Henry Riley in the attached family tree is my g.g.grandfather for certain. I'm going to see if I can find my grandfather's birth certificate and then find his father's birth certificate and so on. I did try this at an earlier date but didn't have much luck.

I've attached a page from Walter Riley's military record, on it you can see his mother is Mrs S. A. Riley, living at the address: 110 King St. Stretford, Manchester, as of 07/07/1940. He was a shop assistant in London. He was Born in Burnley, West Ward, lancashire on 03/07/1913 (note: that address no longer exists as of 1963 after the ww2 Blitz, the area was decimated and the council decided to build an arndale center over the area.)

Where in Lancashire?
A person named Riley was witness to my paternal grandparents marriage in 1896.
This was in Manchester ,near the city centre ,an area known as Collyhurst .
Written about by Engels ,as ‘ “The worst slum in Europe” .
Nevertheless there were good respectable families there ,the conditions were imposed upon the people, they did not create  them .
A long shot but just a chance it might help.
Viktoria.
I don’t have access to my records just now but Henry Addy married Mary Blakemore in 1896 at St Catherine’s Collyhurst
Addresses were Bronze Street and Worth Street.

Hi,

My Riley family spans nine generations over 200 years and dates back to the late 18th century and the birth of Joseph Riley around 1798. Many of his descendants were born in the heart of London, particularly in the areas north of the river in Islington and Hackney.

Though my family roots w/ my g.g.grandfather and his parents seem to be based in Accrington/Burnley - there's probably a story behind that movement from London to Lancashire but I'm not aware of it.

Regarding your grandparents marriage, that year suggests it could have been one of my 3rd gen relatives perhaps; impossible for me to know. There's over 10,000 Riley families in Lancashire so probably unlikely to be one of my relatives tbh.

Thanks
James

Have you checked the Surname Interests Board to see if anybody is researching the same family?

Scroll to bottom of this page & link is under TOOLS

See you have also posted your interest on this post

Hi,

Yeah I checked that chat and commented also, none of the families mentioned in that thread are included on my family tree, though they may be relatives without knowing. I left a few people messages about their 18th and 19th century relatives.

Thanks
James

Hello chaps,

I'm a Riley living in Lancashire, 30, I'm looking for descendants of my earliest known relative Joseph Riley b. c1798

My family history can be found on this website: https://camptonfamily.uk/riley-family/

My link to this family tree is my g.g.grandfather Henry Riley b. c1886 - he had 8 siblings - I believe 5 died before reaching the age of 10, but 2 of his brothers and his sister survived, alas they we're estranged, though I would like to meet any living relatives if they're still in Lancashire.

If I do have any relatives reading this message I'd be curious to know if you have any information on Joseph Riley - in any case, recent information about your closest relatives would allow for me to create a more complete version of our family tree  :)

Warm regards,
James Riley
