Thank you to everyone who replied to posts from DollyH on this and other threads on this website, but my grandmother died earlier this year.

There's quite a kerfuffle about Malcolm's website raging on the Calderdale Family History Society's message board.  It seems that many people would like his Calderdale Companion to come back.  Let's hope he reconsiders.

Thanks for the references, Malcolm.  I knew that you had a lot of info about Halifax in West Yorkshire, but I wasn't aware that you knew Old English too.  Nice for our paths to cross again.

The Common Room / Old English / Anglo-Saxon
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 16:34 GMT (UK)  »
I have been thinking about refreshing my virtually nonexistant knowledge of Old English.  I studied the language years ago [in the 1960s] when it was still called Anglo-Saxon and the only books we had were Sweet's Primer and his Reader.  Are there any more recent students of the language who could suggest a good grammar or textbook?  I'm not afraid of grammar or grammatical terms and I don't really like patronizing approaches to study.  Any suggestions would be most welcome.

What was the point of the programme?  What did we learn?  That ploughing was hard and inappropriate for mediocre, overpaid actresses with infeasibly long finger-nails?  Why didn't she try spinning, cooking on an open fire or something else suitably feminine? Oh yes, we did learn that she had ancestors.  Dumbing-down, or what?  Thank God for the OFF button.

Thanks, Falkyrn.  The MSCONFIG solution seemed to do the trick.

Technical Help / Where is the STARTUP folder?
« on: Thursday 21 December 06 11:43 GMT (UK)  »
I'm using Windows XP and want to change the stuff that happens when I restart Windows. I seem to recall that there is a STARTUP folder for this, but I've searched and found several such folders but not the one I want. Can somebody put me on the right track? Thanks in advance

Technical Help / Re: Problem with IPSWITCH WS_FTP
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for your suggestions, Tony.

Absolutely nothing has changed either on my computer or at AOL which I use.  Thanks for your suggestions, Tony. The only unusual thing which happened in the 10 minutes or so between my using it successfully this morning and it getting screwed up this afternoon is that I accidentally opened 2 sessions of WS_FTP at the same time.

When I emailed IPSWITCH, all they said was [more or less]

Oh it does that now and again!

without any contrition or hints for fixing it.

However, in desperation, I un-installed and then re-installed the software and it is now back to normal.

I don't have the heart to open 2 sessions again just to see if that's the cause of my problem.

Panic over ... for now.

Technical Help / Problem with IPSWITCH WS_FTP
« on: Tuesday 19 December 06 16:53 GMT (UK)  »
I have been using IPSWITCH WS_FTP for a couple of years to upload stuff from my computer to my host webspace.  The WS_FTP screen is usually divided into 2 halves: one for the source directory on my computer where the files are coming from, and one for the directory on the host webspace where the files are going to.  Suddenly, the window for my computer is blank and it only offers me a BLANK CONNECTION PANE which only allows me to send stuff from a remote connection to a remote connection.

Has anyone else experienced this?

How can I get things back the way they were?
