Also, Andrew. From what I have found out it seems that his initial sentence was death, which might explain why he attempted to escape. And I've also found that he had no prior convictions. So a sentence of death for stealing clothes or a comb does seem a bit harsh. But, they were diferent times.

Thanks again Andrew. I really appreciate it. I live in Tamworth, about 4.5hr drive from Molong. One of these days I'll make a trip down there to visit the grave myself.

Hi guys, I've landed here as I'm a Paton in Australia researching my family tree and John Paton born 1806 from Sligo is also my ancestor. I see that Andrew replied "I have had a chance to have another look and I can dig out all sorts of stuff including his life in York, his conviction etc" but I am unable to message Andrew direct because I've only just signed up as a member here, and the ability to PM other members is limited. If you see this message Andrew (or anyone) I'd love to learn more about Johns life before he came to Australia.
