Thursday 8 May 7.30pm
The sources we rely on for our family histories provide information, but the analysis of that information and formulation into proof requires a structured method. Currently there is little guidance on this for beginning and intermediate family historians, especially in the UK.

This talk will discuss methodologies, what they are and why they are useful. It will introduce an effective, easy-to-follow research methodology and show how it can be used to successfully solve complex cases.

What will people learn?

What a research methodology is
Why it’s important
Six Steps to solving difficult genealogy problems
How to use the Six Steps to be more successful in your research

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Hidden Secrets of the 1939 Register
« on: Friday 31 January 25 15:17 GMT (UK)  »
The 1939 Register is often described as an extra census for England and Wales, but it's much more.

Although assembled in 1939, the Government continuously updated it with changes in names, deaths, and other key details until about 1990. Some updates are visible, while others are hidden in annotations and codes next to entries. This presentation will show how to decode these markings, offering deeper insights.

Learn how to search the register and uncover its hidden secrets to enhance your family history research.

Linda Hammond is a professional genealogist who has been active in genealogy for over 35 years as both a researcher and a lecturer.  She is a tutor at the University of Strathclyde and, in addition to her teaching role, Linda frequently speaks at conferences and family history fairs, where she shares her knowledge and expertise.

Here is a letter I used, with names removed, in case it is helpful.
I only knew this lady's address so I could not use online methods anyway.
I chose to head the letter with my postal address and my email address but not give my phone number.
I did not want to bombard her with information, but I did want to give enough to show that I was not a scammer or ID thief of any kind.

Dear M

We don’t know each other and you have probably never heard of me, but I think I am your first cousin, once removed.

I believe (unless there is a coincidence of names) that you are the daughter of W and M xxx (nee xxx).  I am the granddaughter of M xx (W’s oldest sister, known as M).

I know very little about my great grandfather (your grandfather) George S born circa 1875; I do have one photo of him, given to me by my grandmother, which I enclose.  It was taken in an artist’s studio about 100 years ago.  I also enclose a photo which I think may be your own father as a young man. I have originals of both photos.

If you are interested in exchanging information and old family photos I would love to hear from you.  If you use the internet please email me.  I have a few other photos which might interest you and would be very keen to see copies of any of yours, or other family memorabilia.

I hope you don’t mind me contacting you out of the blue. If you are not interested in pursuing the connection there is no need to post anything back to me.

With Speaker Denise Bates

The marriage day was fixed, the wedding dress bought, the wedding tour planned, the wedding guests invited. The day came but not the bridegroom...
However, the real Miss Havishams didn't mope in faded wedding finery - they hired lawyers and struck the first 'no win, no fee' deals to sue for breach of promise.

From the 1790s right up to the 1960s, jilted women (and sometimes rejected male suitors) employed a range of tactics to bring false lovers to book. Denise Bates' book uncovers over 1,000 forgotten cases of women who found very different endings to their fictional counterpart.

Mary Elizabeth Smith forged evidence of a courtship to entrap an Earl
Catherine Kempshall shot the man who denied their engagement
Gladys Knowles was awarded a record £10,000 damages by a jury in 1890
Daisy Mons discreetly negotiated a £50,000 settlement from a Lord
Based on original research, this social history of breach of promise shows that when men behaved badly, hell had no fury like a woman scorned.

Breach of Promise to Marry investigates the social and cultural history of broken engagements between 1780-1970 and why the law allowed the person who had been jilted to claim damages from the person who had broken the engagement.

Denise has written a book based on her original research in contemporary newspapers and literature, to discover who were the real Miss Havishams, why they found different endings to their fictional counterparts and what their experiences reveal about social attitudes to broken engagements.

A huge variety of carriages, omnibuses, trade vehicles, carts and wagons existed and we look at the regional differences, the types of transport and the horses which pulled them.
