I suspect Oslow is a mistranscription of Horsely / Horsley / 'Orsley. This document is just a transcribed index and we don't know how many generations away from the original records it is.
See image 1164 for source of document

Then that's a relief! I just wonder how someone could mistake Horsley for Oslow.

Found this written lic. for Joseph Mercer Jan 26 1778, p. Treeton, Mason...just need an account to sign in IGI..

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01trt/

to Elizabeth Oslow of Colwick at Colwick

Barnabas Mercer of Nottingham, Mason, signs bond

This is confusing.

I can't find anything about Elizabeth Oslow. As far as I can tell there isn't even an Oslow family in Nottingham.

Edit: If it helps, Joseph's wife Elizabeth was buried in 1805 at age 50.

Above parents and area mentioned as simpler to below Christening details for reference
Name   Henry Thomas Macey
Sex   Male
Father's Name   Samuel Macey
Father's Sex   Male
Mother's Name   Priscilla
Mother's Sex   Female

Event Date   29 Oct 1854
Event Place   Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire, England, United Kingdom

Since they had so many children, sometimes the census report for their household would go onto the next page, and not all the time transcribers realize this and put the names on the next page down as a separate household.

This just seems to be a case of transcribers not communicating and making duplicate records. Since I'm around 60% sure ancestry gets half of its record from other places (Like Familysearch or FreeReg) and doesn't bother to check its credibility. There is only ever one Samuel Macey c1831 baptized in Fonthill Gifford.
Samuel on 25 Sep 1831 to James Macey and wife Alice, Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire.
Samuel Macey and Priscilla Burt 1854 in Tisbury, Wiltshire. (Marriage Registration)
Priscilla on 16 Sep 1832 to William Burt and wife Harriet, Fonthill Gifford, Wiltshire.

Thank you! Guess my hunch was right.

Makes me wonder how they met. As far as I know Joseph, his father, and almost every single one of his sons were Masons. Maybe they met in Norton but she wanted to be married in her hometown.

Thank you!
1 down, another to go.

I've been entertaining Thomas Henry's in the area now but none of them are matches.

I'm trying to find the marriage for Joseph Mercer b. 1754 and Elizabeth. They have about 9 children with the first being baptized in 1778.

I have Thomas Mercer, who I believe is the son of Joseph and Elizabeth because of the fact Joseph and Elizabeth had a son named Barnabas and later Thomas names his son Barnabas. All these events occurred in Treeton.

This makes me wonder if Thomas was born out of marriage and baptized under his alleged mother's maiden name.

Wiltshire Lookup Requests / Mary + Henry Thomas Macey ?
« on: Tuesday 06 May 25 05:06 BST (UK)  »
Two siblings:
Henry Thomas Macey b. 1854 Fonthill Gifford
Mary Macey b. 1861 Fonthill Gifford
Born to Samuel Macey and Priscilla Burt.

Henry Macey disappears after the 1871 census, where he is still with his family.
Mary Macey disappears after the 1881 census, where she is a servant for the Smith family in Langton-Matravers, Dorset.

Two of their siblings end up living in Dorset, and one in Somerset. Two immigrated to Canada, but said siblings immigrated between 1900-1910.

Any information about them would be appreciated.

were they protestant or catholic?

I'm not sure. None of their children or grandchildren are religious, on my side at least. The cemetery they are buried in isn't a religious one, and was instead started by my older family and friends, as the main cemetery in the town nearby wouldn't let them be buried there, as they weren't catholic.

Because of this I'm not sure if Gottfried and Margretta wanted to be buried there, or if they weren't religious at all in Canada. If I would guess, I would say Catholic or Romanian Orthodox, as the town nearby is mainly that.

You might not be able to find a marriage between Henry and Alice because it may have been a clandestine marriage or a "fleet marriage." Which was held in secrecy, and many times without a church banns or marriage license. The marriage act of 1753 stopped this from happening frequently.

I find with many of my ancestor who lived before the 1750s have no marriage record. It makes finding a mother's maiden name or who a daughter marries very hard. If they have rare given name, like Frances, Priscilla, or Cornelia, I find baptism records that include a mother's name, and try to track the mother until they die. I usually go off of names, and it helps if someone else in the family also has a rare given name, as then her children may also have the same name. If a burial record with an age can be found, it's even better. Of course I doubt everyone is 100% correct.
