Roscommon / The Briar Line
« on: Saturday 18 October 25 08:24 BST (UK)  »
Does anybody have any information on the "Briar Line"?

I have seen a reference (specifically to the upper Arigna valley) that suggests that potato crops "above the Briar Line" were less prone to the blight. I am assuming this is something to do with the micro climate in the hills?  Does anyone know of any maps depicting the Briar line?

Roscommon / Kellys in Aghafin, Co. Roscommon

Looking for help from the Kelly clan!
My 2x great grandmother was Mary McKenna (nee Kelly) who was (we think) from Aghafin near Arigna, Co. Roscommon.  Father might have been John?  Mary died in 1877 aged 41.  Looking for her birth date and any information about her, her parents or her siblings.
Thanks Clemans.

I found it!

Thanks for all those who contributed.

I have made contact with a long lost cousin in Ireland who has family knowledge that Mary Kelly and her son Michael McKenna are buried in an unmarked grave at the graveyard at the Tarmon Abbey on the shore of Lough Allen, Leitrim.

Thanks to all for the info!

One more if anyone can:

Can anyone interpret the handwritten text at the top right of the attached.
Clearly the tithe to be paid is 17s 6.25p and this is split into two equal payments.
Trying to workout if the payments are to two separate entities or two payments spread across the year.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks one and all!

I suspect we are all a little bit right.

I have attached the full document I have, which clearly has Arable and Pasture under the heading "Quality" of the land.  I have read elsewhere that the use of 1, 2, 3 etc. to denote the quality was the norm, with some areas deviating from this - clearly this is one of them.

Does someone know the key to the 1, 2, 3 system, perhaps 1 = pasture or some such thing?

Thanks Clemans

Can anyone help?

I am trying to decipher the word in the 6th column of the attached 1833 tithe record.
The word is a description of the quality of the land.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for your help.

I am visiting the area in a couple of weeks, should be very moving to follow my Grandfathers footstep from 1917.

Thanks again.
