Family History Beginners Board / Re: Looking for photos of my ancestors
« on: Monday 03 November 25 18:13 GMT (UK)  »
For anyone that may try to assist in my request, Ernest Henry Godden was a member of Royal Artillery at Dover Castle on 30th April 1907, and was charged an absentee from their No. 1 Regiment in Woolwich. He was discharged on 17th June 1907 for misconduct.
According to his service record, his description was as follows:

Height: 5ft | 7 1/2 ins
Weight: 132lbs
Chest measurement: 36ins (when fully expanded) | 2 1/2 ins (rate of expansion)
Complexion: Fresh
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Brown
Religious Denomination: Wesleyan
Distinctive Marks: Circular scar inner side of R. knee cap

As for Ernest Victor, I can't seem to find a military record (despite him being of suitable age at the time War would have started) so can only assume coal miners were exempt - or that he had got something from the mines that made him unfit for duty.

Good evening,

I've been building up my family tree for over a year now, most information I need comes to me in the end. However, I always struggle with finding photos of family (not recent family photos, mind you). The people I've always tried finding photographs for are Ernest Victor Godden (he worked in Snowdown Colliery, Dover sometime around the late 20s-30s and maybe later (in case that helps with finding a pic of him)) and Ernest Henry Godden.

Ernest Henry Godden: 1st October 1889-1961
Ernest Victor Godden: 1st March 1911-May 1984
(Both born in Dover, Kent)

The only information I have on them is via newspapers (EH attempted suicide and deserted his Woolwich barracks in 1907, and EV fractured his leg in Snowdown Colliery in 1927).

Any photographs or information as to where I can find them will be most welcome! My parents have no photographs on the Godden side beyond my grandfather, who is neither EV or EH.

Thanks for any help you may bring, and I will continue on my own to try and find some photographs of them (just in case I get lucky)

Thank you, Gaffy! Although it's next to impossible to find a photograph of him, especially after all this time, or his battalion, a description does nicely!

I may continue my search someday, in the hopes to find a group photo of the 8th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers before his death in August 1916.

You are correct! His wife was Catherine Barry, however on the family tree I have (on Familysearch) I don't see a brother in his family that shares the same name, who is 5 years younger, and a wife with the same first name as well.

The information I have gathered was received that alludes to Philip Naughton being (at least to myself) the same man who died in 1916 was from:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56492210/philip-naughton

This aided in my overall deduction that both individuals were a very likely match. If I am wrong, however, I will not hesitate to be corrected (provided there is sufficient evidence that alludes to prior points being correct).

Thank you for the help you have given in this matter regardless, even though I am unable to view the content due to not having an Ancestry subscription

Limerick / Need help finding photograph/description of WW1 Soldier
« on: Friday 25 July 25 20:29 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to find a photograph (or, failing that, a description) of my 3rd great-grandfather, L/Cpl Philip Naughton, who served in the 8th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers until his death (DOW) on 31 August 1916. I believe he died in the Battle of the Somme.

I'm hoping some information may be found in this forum as he lived in Limerick, or, more specifically, a village called Shanagolden.

His regiment was 3606.

If any more information is required, I'd be glad to assist.
This endeavour has taken me hours to no avail, and with assistance from people outside this board.

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Need help with looking up a long-dead relative's Mother

More or less. My mum remembers a second photo of her and other family members in a hall, and she didn't see that one in the newspaper I looked at (October 26th 1990, Chatham News, page 4). It's likely in the other one mentioned on here (Nov 16th 1990), and I don't wish to pay £15 for the privilege to look at it online.

So instead, my parents and I are going to the local library at some point to search for them

If you can't attach the article, could you please tell me where you found it, or hyperlink it (if that wasn't what you meant by attach)?

I'm sure my mum would love to see her great-grandmother's face once again :)

Douglas Collins is my great-granddad on my mother's side. My mum had a mother named Maureen, who had a mother named Elizabeth, who had a husband named Douglas Collins.
