I can't see any other marriages with Fanny as a witness.

There's a marriage in 1903 for a Joseph age 23 father John, Shepherd
the witnesses are a Mabel & R SENTANCE ...

Thank you - still difficult to tell with Fanny's signature. They look similar, but smaller. Signatures I've seen don't seem to vary much from one person to another.  I suppose it was how they were taught to write back then.  JHBC and Elizabeth's only daughter was Mabel too - I was thinking named after her sister, but that would have been a popular name.

I'm sure it's the same family. Married in the same church too and I've not come across another family in my research so far that fits dates and area.

Not sure if you have the burial information for JHBC and his parents... the information is available on sheffieldindexers, gives cemetery name & grave number
search burials, enter cemetery name and surname Carter

Yes I regular visit Indexers - thank you.

Thank you again.  I have access to all John Issac Sentance's family on FamilySearch. I checked out his brother William but dates don't fit.  I'll be visiting the library again shortly to access Ancestry so what I need to do is check for Fanny as a witnesses at all John Issac's children's weddings, including Mary's you gave, to see if signatures match.

I have already done the Bartholomew/Carter side of things thank you. I didn't make it clear when I mentioned them, that I was pointing out the difference in the use of names when I was agreeing with you about William possibly being entered in error. What you did give is the son John Henry Bartholomew's marriage date so I can get a marriage certificate hopefully from Ancestry as they uploaded Sheffield ones recently.

Thank you so much Ladyhawk for taking the time to research this. I've been a year researching all 4 sides of my family and switch from one to another. I have only started Sentance a few weeks ago. I haven't been paying for any certificates and am aware I can get these and will do if I get a brick wall. Great idea to get the other marriage witnesses and signatures, something I haven't yet thought about.  Forgot to mention, but you will have seen, Fanny Sentance was another witness on my Elizabeth's marriage and she was on one of John's children's marriage, although obviously not necessarily the same Fanny, but with that and Henry Horton being a witness too (Mary Horton's father is Henry Horton so if it's the same Elizabeth, he would be her grandfather). The signatures of Elizabeth do look similar, don't you think, but she messed up her signature on the other one. I'm interested now to see Fanny's signature so can check for that next time I visit the library as that's where I access Ancestry free.  All the info you gave about the children are what I had seen on FamilySearch so that is the one on there, but his middle name is Isaac.  You could be right about the William being her brother as errors must happen all the time.  My Elizabeth married Henry Bartholomew but I've seen records with him John Bartholomew and Henry Bartholomew Carter (his father was called Henry Bartholomew Carter as he married a woman called Carter). Later on Henry dropped 'Bartholomew' and was known as just Henry Carter.

I've just started researching my Sentance side of the family. My great grandma Elizabeth Sentance, born 1858, Norwell, Nottingham. She married Henry Bartholomew Carter (from Roxby, Lincolnshire) in 1883, Hawton, Notts and they moved to Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Their marriage certificate shows her father as William Sentance, Shepherd.  I recently entered these details on FamilySearch and it appears from the Tree on there that John Isaac Sentance could be her father and I have left a message on there in case anyone visits the page to ask if John could be William as often back then, different names were used. However, not seen any records of John Isaac Sentance having the name William, but John was also a shepherd and in that family. John's wife was Mary Horton and the witness on Elizabeth and Henry's marriage was Henry Horton. Would love to hear from anbody who might have an idea.  Also, I have seen from these messages and another forum that there is a Facebook forum for Sentance family but have not been able to find it.  Thanks

Thank you.  Cofl registers were on my to do list but you've prompted me to start sooner - definitely worth a look. I've spent over 3 hours on the nli.ie site and only just found one Triggs' baptism and can't read it properly but it's not one I know about. The Tintern ones on there only go back to 1827 from what I can see. I've looked for marriage records for 1830s for various Triggs too and when scrolling through, all I see is baptisms, despite selecting 'marriages'. Tried to access Anglican records on Church of Ireland but my antivirus is blocking the site. I give up for today.

You folks should also take a look at the will of William (IIRC) Trigg, a "Protestant gentleman" of Wexford, who died around 1866. He was a brush maker, with a shop on Main St. A grandson of his   married a relative of mine.

Hi Wexflyer....

Hi there - I just noticed your post. I did not seem to get a notification of it, which is unusual.

Anyway, regarding William Trigg:

Years ago I noticed a mention of him in a journal or book article. IIRC it was to the effect that his children appeared in both the Catholic and CofI parish registers. Can't remember where exactly I saw this reference.

In any case, William was married to Mary Culliton, and two of their children's baptisms appear in the Catholic registers, namely
- Elizabeth Triggs, bapt. 18-2-1810, and
- Thomas Triggs, bapt. 4-12-1812.

Either Elizabeth or another unknown daughter married Dr. Mathew Devereaux of Wexford.

Wonderful, thank you. In my records I had noted a William Trigg married to Mary Ann Collition and on that same document underneath was my 4 times great grandfather Richard Trigg marriage to Catherine Cutler, but I didn't realise that William was the William who did the will.  It's still very difficult to place him in the family. Well, I hope he does fit somewhere. I've become fond of him  ;)

Contrary to William's express wish, as stated in his will, he was not buried in Tintern. Instead, he is buried in Selskar Abbey, in Wexford town.

Thank you.  I knew he was in Selskar Abbey and had seen the Will but didn't pick up on his request not being carried out. I wonder why. I requested a photo on Find A Grave recently - not sure if you are interested or already have it.
