Yes I have seen it come up a lot in that tree. I know travellers do have name patterns.

I think our situation was pretty similar. Our Abigail died in her 40s so I think very little information was passed on. That and they have moved to Yorkshire from Lincolnshire and her parents had a few arrests for disorderly behaviour under their belts. Tough lives for them all I guess!

Thank you

Yes that's them. Their daughter Abigail is my grandfathers grandmother. I think Abigail is where they stop being known as travellers. Those in my family I've spoken to didn't know of any travellers in the family.  Which seems such a shame to have no kept any connections. I think Abigail married a local lad as I don't see any hints to a traveller history on his side.

Im descended from Charles gray of Meldreth via his son Christopher Gray who married Maria Smith d/o William Smith and Ann Elliott of Willoughby on the Wolds. These two ended their days in Horncastle.
Christopher & Maria had my great great grandad Samuel Gray, who married Deliah Smith the daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary Brown. These were all travelling families and they repeatedly intermarry.

Hi An65

I'm descended from William and Ann too (if I have done my tree correctly) Their daughter Matilda is my ggg grandmother.

Hello, I'm looking to confirm the next generation in my tree. I've got who I suspect but I want to be as accurate as possible.

I'm trying to confirm the parents of Hilda Locking who married Douglas Kay

The married in 1925 but I can't find a detailed marriage. Just their names and the date of the marriage.

Douglas was I think jan 5th 1904
Hilda Locking was born Nov 1905

I know she definitely died in 1981 as I was both in 1980 and was supposed to be taken to see her and she died 2 days before. We were living overseas.

Thank you for time taken to do this!

There is an article in the Lincolnshire Chronicle on 18th March 1864, which indicates that Matilda was a Romany.

She was in front of the magistrates for being drunk and riotous on the Boston Road.

"he is described as "MATILDA FAIREY alias GIPSEY TILL, of Horncastle,"

Other times in front of the magistrates in 1881, 1889 and 1896.

Another in 1873 when "George Fairy, of Horncastle, charged by his wife Matilda Fairy with using threats to her, was discharged."

David

Thank you! I thought as much as had found snippets elsewhere that hinted at a possibility. This is amazing and much appreciated! As are all the other responses from people!

GRO Reference: 1876  J Quarter in HORNCASTLE  Volume 07A  Page 583

Looks like Matilda may have had a child with her employer in the 1881 Census?

1891 George/Matilda are living next door to one another but separate residences.

Trish :)

I noticed a Tree does not have Matildas death reg.

Looks to me that she married her Boarder from the 1901 Census.

Marriages Mar 1904
Fairey  Matilda Horncastle 7a 787
Henry JACKSON on same page

1901 census
Matilda Fairy Head Mar (no age given on Anc.) born Navenby Image is 66
Harry Jackson 67 Boarder Wdr Farm Lab

Death Reg;
Deaths Mar 1906
JACKSON    Matilda age 66    Horncastle 7a 370

George died 1903 so she was free to Marry.

I have a feeling in my searches around that they may have been romany travellers. Matilda's family were at least.

Thank you
