I forgot to mention that I was able to find the death cert for Janet Nicol's (1812-1907) sister Jane Nicol (abt 1817-1889)

She was married to Robert Smith an Agri Labourer and died aged 73, Hillside, Parish of Montrose.  Her Father John Tindal Tailor (Journeyman) (deceased) and her Mother Jane Nicol MS Tindal (deceased)

I haven't had any luck so far finding the death certs for her other two sisters Margaret and Ann.

Ann shows on the 1851 Census listed as a Dressmaker aged 26 residing with her parents at Hillside of Hedderwick, Angus
Margaret married  John Stewart in 1835 in Laurencekirk and has at leat one son in 1836 name John Tindal Stwart.

Hi Liviani,

My 3x great grannie is Janet Nicol b 28 Apr 1812 Montrose, Angus, Scotland. I agree with you that the MS on her death cert of Smith is wrong and should be Tindal.  I had done a lot of digging around and concluded Smith was an error.

I am descended from her daughter Janet (Jessie) Nicol Stott b 28 Oct 1855 Rossie Island, Craig, Angus who married Robert Young a Printwork Mechanic in Lennoxtown, Campsie 04 Nov 1878.
She died 14 Nov 1892 days after the birth of their last child aged only 37

Their children were

Janet Nicol YOUNG b 26 Jan 1879
Isabella Patrick YOUNG b 28 May 1880
William YOUNG b 23 Apr 1882
James YOUNG b 30 Aug 1884
Margaret YOUNG b 01 Nov 1886
Robina YOUNG b 10 Feb 1888
Robert YOUNG b 22 Jan 1890
Elizabeth Pyper YOUNG b 09 Nov 1892

The middle name Pyper comes from Janet Nicol Stott's sister Elizabeth Stott who became PYPER after marrying David Pyper.
The middle name Patrick comes from the male line and Robert's mother's Maiden name PATRICK

My great Gran was Janet Nicol YOUNG and I'm named after the Janet's going back through the Nicol (Nichol) line.

I hope some of this helps and I'd be really to happy to hear from you and share info!

Kind regards
Another Janet  :)

Hi everyone, looking for some help in pinning down Janet's parents, I have two different possible mothers for her.

My 4x great-grandmother is Janet Nicoll, born approx 1812, in Craig Parish near Montrose.

She married James Stott in 1836 in Craig, indexed as follows;

STOTT
JAMES
JESSE NICHOL/
17/12/1836
280/
30 174
Craig

Janet/Jessie Nicoll dies in 1907 in Rossie Island at the grand old age of 95. The informant is her son (my 3x great-grandfather) James Stott b.1843.

On this DC her parents have been informed as 'John Nicoll' (Tailor) and 'Jessie Nicoll m.s. Smith'.

I'm unsure if this is an error made by James Stott. My reason for this is that there is a birth of a Janet Nicoll indexed on SP as follows;

NICOLL
JANET
JOHN NICOLL/JEAN TINDAL
F
28/04/1812
312/
50 434
Montrose

I checked the 1841 census (FreeCen) for possible matches for a John and Jean Nicoll;

I believe I have found them, unfortunately Jean/Jane/Jessie isn't listed with her maiden name as sometimes happens in 1841.

They are living at Hillside of Hedderwick, Parish of Montrose. John Nichol, 55, Occ; Tailor and Jane Nichol, 55. Both born Angus. With John being listed as a Tailor on his daughter's DC I feel this is them.

This may not be solvable but do we think that James Stott made an error with his grandmother's name and is it actually Jean/Jane/Jessie TINDAL instead of SMITH?

Note; I have at present 9 children born to James Stott and Janet Nicoll. Unfortunately I don't have any middle names for them which may indicate any maiden names of their maternal grandmother. The children I have for this couple are as follows;

Jane          b.1837 Craig
Ann           b.1839 Craig
Elizabeth    b. abt 1841 Craig
James        b.1843 Craig
John          b.1844 Craig
George      b.1846 Craig
David        b.1849 Montrose
Robert       b.1850 Craig
Jessie        b.1856 Craig

Many thanks for any advice given.

EDIT:

Forgot to add this to my post. Interestingly James Stott's parents where a John Stott and an Ann(e) TINDAL Whether or not this is coincidence or significant I am not sure.

'Bardarroch'

Hi I'm new to RootsChat so I hope I'm using it correctly,

Aeroqueen,

My 3rd great grandparents Lachlan Sinclair and Catherine MacLachlan lived there. and had their family, so my 2nd great grandad Duncan Sinclair b 1812 and his siblings were born at Barradarroch (Bardarroch, Baradarroch) from 1805-1819

I have found it on Canmore and the ruin of Bardarroch still shows on the current OS Explorer maps 1:25 000 scale at grid ref NR 808 916.  It's between the Dunardry Locks and Bellanoch on the south side of the Canal.  I have also found it in a wee book of walks in the Lochgilphead/Crinan are but I can't put my hand to it just now to give you the details.

In Marian Pallister's book 'The Crinan Canal' (Birlinn Origin) there are four references to Bardarroch.  She mentions that for the building of the Crinan Canal eight houses at Dunardry farm and another at Bardarroch would have to be demolished to make way for the course of the canal so it sounds like a fair bit of the land was lost.

Also in Scotland's Places lists it as 'An dwelling house and Byre which formerly had a farm of land attached but is now blended with that of Dounans.'

I hope this is of some help!
Kind regards

 :)
