England / Re: Tracing Thomas Duckworth and Ellen Davis
« on: Wednesday 03 July 24 12:57 BST (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your assistance.

I have just learnt that he was born in Madras, so I believe this is the Thomas born to Thomas Duckworth and Sarah Boot in 1837. Thomas' father marries Caroline Fuller in 1845 after first wife Sarah died, and the arrival record for the Palmyra in 1854 mentions that his mother is Caroline.

I'm fairly confident this is my ancestor now. The only discrepancy is that his mother is recorded on both his marriage and death certificate as Ellen Davis. I can't think of a reason he would make up a name (Sarah died when he was 6yo, but I assume he would still know her name). Thomas' wife from Australia was also named Ellen, but that's probably just coincidence.

Thanks again everyone

England / Tracing Thomas Duckworth and Ellen Davis
« on: Sunday 30 June 24 11:24 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find any record of my English 3x great grandparents. They had a son named Thomas Duckworth who emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in the 1860's, but I am not sure where to start looking for records of them.

The only information I have is:

Thomas Duckworth and Ellen Davis had a child named Thomas c1840 in East India
Thomas Snr was a doctor
Thomas Jnr was married in a Catholic church in Melbourne in 1866
Thomas Jnr's headstone mentions he was a native of Surrey

I've searched for records in India and UK medical registers to no avail. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Limerick / Looking for McGraths in Limerick, originating from Lahill/Cahile
« on: Wednesday 26 June 24 12:36 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate where my McGrath ancestors originated from in Limerick.

A few details about them:
James McGrath (c1810-) was married to Johanna Collins (c1810-1886) around 1830.

The couple had at least five children –
Michael (c1832-1905)
Mary (c1835-1878)
Julia (c1836-1925)
Johanna (c1840-1925)
Ellen (c1842-1923)

The children and Johanna emigrated to Melbourne, Australia over the 1850’s and 1860’s, although I don't believe James ever emigrated.

I'm trying to locate where they originated from in Limerick. On the birth certificate of one of Mary’s  children, Mary’s birthplace is stated as ‘Lahill’, whilst a similar certificate for Julia states her birthplace as ‘Cahill’ or ‘Cahile’. I’ve attached copies of the original transcription.

I've been unable to locate any records of the family in Limerick. The family were Roman Catholic, and unfortunately I have been unable to locate any of their church records. The only location I could find remotely similar was the RC Parish of Loghill/Loughill. I have found a McGrath and Collins in the Griffith's Valuation for Loghill Village, but this might just be coincidence.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
