The Common Room / Re: GRO British Forces births overseas - ordering a cert?

Sorry, I should have made it clear that this search was conducted entirely by Internet/telephone. The helpful person I found answered when I phoned and a copy of my father's baptismal certificate was emailed to me.

As I have French ancestors here and there, and also British ancestors who live for a longer or shorter time in France, my main area of interest is France.

My message about birth certificates in India 1900 was swept away befopre I had finished writing. The British Library holds the India Office records, and after searching for ages for my father's birth registration, a very helpful person there told me that at that date there were no birth certificates, only baptismal certificates.

This might be a red herring or might save some unnecessary searching : trying to find my father's birth certificate in India 1900, I finally had advice from a very helpful person in the British Library where the India Offfice records

Europe / Return to Jacques François Xavier Whyte
« on: Wednesday 26 June 24 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I hope that the interest in Whyte, expressed on RootsChat some years ago, is still alive and well. As a direct descendant of Whyte via his daughter Sophia, I should be so glad to hear of any further progress made, and in return I can add some details from our family archives. I live in France and speak French, and I believe I have some information from this side of the Channel that was missing last time round.

Are there any ideas about his religion ? In general he would have had to be Catholic to serve in the French army, unless exceptions were made for the Irish Brigade ; on the other hand, the Lamberts were Protestant and a mixed-religion marriage to Anna Lambert would have been complicated to say the least.

It is said that "he was dubbed the Comte de Whyte de Malleville". Dubbed by whom, and was this title ever really recognised by the French authorities ? It obviously suited Sophia, marrying into a baronetcy, to lean on this title but...

I hope this will trigger some replies
