Family History Beginners Board / Tips to get further back in a tree once the census information

I have hit a brickwall in researching my family tree. I am currently looking at the Lumley branch of the tree who all seems to come from Yorkshire ( areas cropping up a lot are Ripon, Castleford, Grantley, Skelding, Grewelthorpe). I have traced back to an Anthony Lumley born in 1703 but just cannot find anything further back than that. I have working my way back through the North Yorkshire Baptism, Marriage and Burial books 1558 - 1812 and although there are plenty of Lumleys, I can find anything that I confirms who the next person back in the tree is. Any tips would be very welcome!
