The Common Room / Letch House
« on: Wednesday 27 August 25 19:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi, on an 1880's OS map there's a building just outside the village called "Letch Houses". What was a letch house? Something of ill repute?

Hi, Photo of my dad, on the left, during his merchant navy days. On the back there's just "Bob New York". Probably late '50's.
Would it be possible to brighten it up a wee bit and maybe identify the street?
Many thanks
Ian

Hi, thank you all for your help and advice. I've got Catherine Curran's marriage cert. very interesting and useful.
AlanBoyd, are you sure it's Doddington? On the 1871 census it looks like there are two i's. Dissington? Dinnington?

Durham Lookup Requests / Kathrine Miller maiden name and parents
« on: Thursday 06 June 24 15:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Kathrine Miller b. 1865 Houghton le Spring, married to Thomas Miller b. 1858 Hart, Co. Durham.
I've got her on later census when married but can't find trace of her before that. A possible marriage in 1884 in Easington but I'm not sure. Family source, a long time ago, said that at least one of her parents was from Ireland.

Hi,
George Wylie, b. Bamburgh 1865
1881 living with grandparents Robert and Jane Robison
I can't find him in 1871 and can't find his parents. I presume his mother was one of Robert and Jane's daughters. Illegitimate?
