Afternoon.

I am trying to find out when GG Grandfather left ‘Nice’ in France something in the late 1800’s or early 1900s and ended up in South Africa, maybe Durban!

Does anyone know where I can start with this.  I do have some records that I have managed to retrieve re deaths in South Africa.

But not when he immigrated.

Thanks :)

Re Frances Eley marrying a William - do you have the link for this?  Thanks?

Hi Re:  Has anyone found William in 1851? If I have found the right family, he is not with Catherine and the children. Catherine describes herself as butler's wife.

Where did you find this information please. As I haven’t found this.  Yes have occupations of Valet and Messenger in Admiralty.

Thanks

Thank you everyone for your help and for picking up that one sibling of Mary Eley’s died at aged 1 - didn’t pick that up.
I also have this snippet of information from my grandfather’s notes that Mary Gauntlett (nee Eley) came from the family of the Duke of Leinster also Earl of Kildare. Not even sure how I would go about trying to trace this?  There is some link with Norman-Irish, perhaps FitzGerald.  Perhaps some illegitimacy along the line, or someone trying to say that she came from a ‘good family’.  Who knows.

Northumberland / Catherine Marriner b. Abt 1815, Longtown, Arthuret, Cumberland

I have a Catherine nee Marriner (born about 1815), from Longtown, Arthuret, Cumberland on one census and Camberwell Surrey on another census.  She married a William Eley (Messenger Admiralty - not sure of what that means) and had a daughter Mary Eley (1856) who is my GGG. Mary Eley's siblings were Charles and Frances). Mary Eley married Dean Gauntlett .

I am trying to find who Catherine’s parents were.  Can anyone out there help please.   :)

Probably not any help, but I have a Catherine nee Marriner (born about 1815), from Arthuret Longtown, Cumberland on one census and Camberwell Surrey on another census.  She married a William Eley (Messenger Admiralty - not sure of what that means) and had a daughter Mary Eley is my GGG who married Dean Gauntlett (Siblings Charles and Frances).

I am trying to find who Catherine’s parents were.  Is this any connection to your ancestors - or can anyone help. Thank you.

London and Middlesex / Re: Sarah Low / Dollar - Finding First Husband and Death
« on: Sunday 07 April 24 04:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi there.
My goodness what a life Sarah Lowe Dollar Grange Gauntlett lived!
Edward Henry Gauntlett was my GG Grandfather’s brother.
I have also been looking into Sarah Grange (nee Lowe (SP)) although not a direct descendent.
Did her husband Charles die in Sierra Leone, Trinidad?
So was Sarah a slave or owners of slaves - a little confused as I am unsure of how all this reads.
From 1881 census documents it shows that Sarah Grange was 14 years older than EDG.
EHG was born about 1836 so Sarah would be born in about 1822?  You have noted she was born in 1809 which makes her 27 years older than EHG?  Is that right - you said that perhaps altered her age so that it didn’t look like EHG married someone very much older than him?
EHG and SG married on 5 March 1867, EHG appears to be her 3rd husband, or 3rd partner?
EHG died in 1898?
I can’t find information on SG’s death? There are a lot of Sarah Low’s but why would her name appear on death as Low?
Wondering if you have any information on who EHG grandparents are - because from my GF’s notes it doesn’t seem to be William and Mary Gauntlett as appears in other Ancestry members?  Or you are not looking into this side of the family.
Thanks for your help
