Leicestershire / Re: Leicester Jewish cemetery?
« on: Tuesday 18 August 09 19:39 BST (UK)  »
I know there is a part of Gilroes Cemetery on Groby Road, that is just for Jewish graves. If you walk through the main gates, (I can't remember how far in it is), on the right there is an uphill foot path that is partially hidden by hedges. Go up the path, and you will find Jewish graves. I can't tell you how far back they date. I found it by accident about 15 years ago......was being nosey, and thought I wonder what's up here.

Leicestershire / Bassford/Basford?????Confused.
« on: Saturday 10 May 08 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Am trying to trace my Bassford ancestors from Leicester.

We spell our name BASSFORD.

In 1901 My G. G. Grandfather William Bassford lived in Barston St.

In 1881 he is living with his parents, John and Martha.

In some censuses it says John Bassford born 1827 Leicester
John Basford Born 1831, Leicester
John Basford Born 1831 Arnold, Notts.
 ""                 Born 1829 Leics.
Born 1832 Leicester.

In 1861 John is living in Notts, but in 1841 a John Basford is living with his parents in Leicester.

Is this John Basford/Bassford the same person, or have I got it wrong.

I am researching the Melbourne family of Belper.

The earliest member I have got back to is James Melbourne.

Born approx 1813, married to Ann (maiden name possibly Walker)

Would love to know his ancestors names and dates etc.

This would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

I too am descended from a Higgins; Nora Higgins (1813-1845) She was married to John McCormick. After she died, he left Galway with their 3 sons: Patrick, Michael and James, and moved to England.

I am researching my ancestors, called McCormick.

Various mis-spellings of their names I have come across while looking at the census:

McCormack
McCornick
McAuley
M Cormac

I to am researching the Melbourne family. It's funny how you said that "nailing" families married each other so to speak.

I have a  James Melbourne in my tree, who married a Thurza Jackson. Thurza being the daughter of Samuel Jackson, another nailer, who I believe James was an apprentice to.
