Berkshire / Chieveley Post Office

Hello,

My GG Grandparents used to run the Chieveley post office, and are shown there on the 1891 & 1901 Census.

Does anyone know if it is still there? I have 'googled' it and it mentions that they sell lots of provisions too now. I'm guessing that it is not the same building anymore, but if it is I would love to visit it.

Anyone know if it is still there? They are classed as 'Sub-Postmaster & Sub-Postmistress' so I don't know if this is a different one to the one that I found. It is listed on the census as being near Church Lane if this helps?

Thankyou for any help,

Best Wishes

Berkshire / Anyone know Mortimer well?

Hi guys,

Got my Great Grandfathers death certificate through today, and it shows that he died at Railway Cottages, Mortimer.

Does anyone know Mortimer, and if so, know if Railway Cottages are still there? If so, i'll make a trip.

Thankyou.

Well, local knowledge as in I know the area, nothing more really!

I'm trying to find out information about Twyford Flower Show in 1905, you would think it would be easy, but no!

Nothing is easy in FH though is it?

A trip to the record offices it is!

I am willing to accept any theory on this right now, thankyou!

How can I find out for sure? I guess I need to check the marriage records for Ruscombe to see if they married there. Sarah and her husband John Austin had all their children there, and stayed there for the rest of their lives, so I guess it is a possibility that they married there first.

My Grandmothers parents were first cousins, so the John whose BC is above (my Great Grandfather), also had a sister, Ann that ended up being my Great Grandmother. I suppose if I can find the GRO ref for her birth in about 1841 then I could see what Sarahs maiden name was writtern like then?

Grasping at straws I know!

Is there anywhere online where I can check the Ruscombe Parish Records, or do I need to hop over to the RO?

Thankyou again,

xx

Hollendor?? Sounds like something from Lord of the Rings!

Goodness, getting this certificate was supposed to help, not pose loads of other questions!

Thankyou all so much for looking for me, you are all so kind!

Thankyou so much for looking!

Yes, in 1851, she is shown as Ruscombe, but they all are, so I hoped that was a mistake.

I guess a trip to the records office is my only hope of working it out.

It is pretty ropey writing on the certificate though. Am I right to think it is Hollendon? I'll scan it in, hang on.......
