Hi everyone

It's very interesting reading all your stories, and there seems to have been a lot of Keatings in Caherciveen!

I've been trying to track down my grandmother's Irish family who was born Kathleen Teresa Wood in Caherciveen. Her mother was Ellen Mary Keating, born around 1866 and whose father was a Jeremiah Keating born around 1824. I know from the census that Jeremiah was a draper and grocer but don't know anything else about him.

I've been told that Ellen Mary had a sister called Kate and she never married and moved to Waterville.

The only other things I know is that somewhere along the line there were Sullivans and that Maurice was a family name - my grandmother had a brother called Maurice and named her son, my father after him.

Ellen Mary married a James Wood who was English, and who worked at the cable station. My grandmother Kathleen (Kitty) also married a worked at the cable station called Edgar Barton and eventually they all moved back to Liverpool, which is where James came from originally.

If anyone could help me with any info, or suggest a line of enquiry, I'd be really grateful!

Many thanks
Hilary

I've just got back some certificates and you did ask about them!!

Mary Jane Wood born in 1857 shows parents James Wood and Eliza Wood formerly Care, living at the Strand Rye which fits in with the 1861 census.

Mary Jane's marriage certificate shows surname Brettwood and a witness with the name of Care

The birth certificate of MJ's daughter (my grandmother) shows the mother's maiden name as Wood, not Brettwood.

Marriage certificate of James Henry Wood shows him married to Eliza Ann Care. Now interestingly, James has not father listed which I assume means he is illegitimate.

Now that might explain the difference in surname - maybe Wood was his mother's name and maybe his father was called Brett so he added it to his name at some point - could be his mother's deathbed confession  ;)

I don't know, but it now opens up a fascinating line of enquiry - so thanks again for getting me started on this.

This is overwhelming - I can't see why I couldn't find a James Wood in Rye - and believe me I looked several times  ::)

I've sent off for Mary Jane's birth certificate but I'm pretty sure you are all on the right track - her eldest daughter was an Eliza. And the Care family definitely ties in with the witness at her marriage.

Once again, thank you so much - it looks like you had a bit of fun doing that, but I really appreciate your enthusiasm  :-*

Good Lord! What an amazing amount of information - I thought I had tried all possible combinations of names (including just Wood) on LDS and census and I did try ploughing through all the different pages of the Rye census. I must have been doing it wrong!

Having a quick look at some of that info - I have a verbal anecdote that they came from Whitstable and one of the witnesses on the marriage certificate had a last name of Care - so it looks like this is the right track.

Wow - now off to plough through all of this.

What can I say apart from thank you so much -  and I do hope the dinner got cooked eventually :)

I seem to have stalled and wonder if anyone can advise me.

My g,g,grandmother was a Mary Jane Brettwood born in Rye, Sussex in about 1856 according to various census records. I have her wedding certificate which states that her father was James Brettwood, deceased, mariner. No idea who her mother was.

The only record I can find at ancestry or LDS is of a William Brettwood born in Rye in 1852. I have assumed that he is her brother.

There just is no trace whatsoever of any other Brettwoods anywhere (apart from William's wife and children) and I don't quite know where to look.

Does anybody know of any other version of the name Brettwood? If the father was a mariner, could they just have lived under the radar?

I'm really stuck and if anybody has any advice, I'd be really grateful!

Many thanks

Kent / Re: Chatham - Whittaker Street

I too had relatives that lived in Whittaker Street Chatham and I have a print from an OS map of 1898.
If you would like I could email a copy to you.
I am afraid that nothing much is left of the 'Street' now.

Regards

Graham

Graham - that's so kind of you. My ancestors lived there for many years according to the census and I'd love to see a map. I'll pm you

Thank you both so much - I tried Streetmap for Whittaker Street but it didn't come up with one in Chatham, so I assumed that it no longer existed! So glad to hear it does as I can make an expedition there.

Mariners are indeed difficult to trace when all you have is a line on a census return but thanks for the link to that site - I'll have a good look at it.

Kent / Chatham - Whittaker Street
« on: Wednesday 27 September 06 17:55 BST (UK)  »
I know that some ancestors of mine lived in Whittaker Street, Chatham (in 1850s) and I have been trying to find out where in Chatham this street was - I don't think it exists anymore. Does anybody have any idea where I can start to look for this please?

Also, a number of men in my family are marked as Mariners in whichever census I look in - again, does anybody have any advice on where I might start looking at any history of seafaring men in Chatham (besides royal naval) so I can find out what they might have been doing.

Any advice gratefully received!
Thanks
Hils
