cwatterson,

Mt great-grandfather's oldest brother was a James McCaughey, or McCaughley, (1825 -1916) from Lurgan, Armagh. One of his daughters Margaret married a James Larmour English (1887), who had an older brother Howard 1881.

Since Larmour was only on the fringe of my interest I did not look any further! I have no further details about a Larmour connection, but it appears that we both have a link between McCaughey and Larmour, although your dates would indicate the generation above mine.

Gaffy & Heywood,

I am pretty certain the death in 1875 was my great-great grandmother Sarah Bruce because the Maria McCurry named as 'present at death' would most probably have been her daughter Maria. It was only about 2 months before Maria married Robert Refausse! Heywood mentioned a Henry McCurry that could not have been the father! Maybe the Sarah McCurry that died in 1834 was either the mother or an aunt, which could mean that the 'unknown' Henry may have been an uncle!

Since you guys gave me a steer I also found another sister, Jane Bruce McCurry, who married a John Sales (Seales in some documents).

Two of the sisters, Maria & Eleanor, married two brothers - Robert and Samuel Refausse. The Refausse family were quite extensive in the area. I have passed on my findings to some cousins, one of whom lives in Lisburn. He remembers meeting some of the extended family when he was a wee boy and believes that there may be other 'touch points' between our family members.

Thanks again for your help - and patience with a newbie.

Oops - should have gone to Specsavers. I had a number of windows open and picked the wrong one.

Here is the birth record:

Thanks Kiltaglassan, I already have that, but I have been unable to find the birth certificate of his wife Maria, who was born in 1873.

At least I have found a copy of their marriage certificate:

Thanks Aghadowey.

I think your info re Lisburn Cemetery is most probably correct - as I have their birth dates as 1870 and 1873.

Interestingly, in the 1911 Census, Arthur was declared as a boarder in 32 Pandora Street. He married Maria McAuley that same year and they then moved into no 34.

You are obviously an expert at genealogy so could you please answer a question. Why am I unable to find any record of a death certificate, even when entering the dates that you gave me.

Also, you have named sites I have never remotely heard of, but which are superb sources of information. Is there any 'list' available that can give us less experts a wee help?

Just found this thread and noticed om page 2 that you requested info on marriages at Lisburn Cathedral.

Although outside of your timings, my great grandmother's sister got married on 1 Dec 1866. The marriage was between Thomas Wilson and Catherine McCurry

I had not even thought of McCarthy as an option!

Alas, I have absolutely no information about my great great grandmother. I know my great great grandfather was John, with the surname written as McAuley on my great grandfathers marriage certificate, but sadly I know nothing at all about his wife!

This genealogy searching can be so very frustrating when you come up against a brick wall!!!!
